It's an England thing

NEWS from the English Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Staff Website. Commentators have been issued with instructions for the BBC's World Cup coverage.

These include:

· Within one minute of kick off in the opening match (Germany v Costa Rica), the commentator must mention England.

· All Scottish members of our commentary team must continue to refer to England as "we" and "us".

· For matches not involving England, we must only discuss the players that are playing in England (eg - Holland v Argentina should be referred to as Van Nistelroy v Crespo).

· Each match involving England should begin with the phrase "England Expects".

· When England bows out after the first stage, we must emphasise that it is a massive blow to football and a serious loss to the World Cup.

· And of course the magic number 1966 must be insinuated into the conversation at every available opportunity.

Well Bill
Clearly there is a sense of humour failure in Perfidious Albion!
Incidentally, I'm sending you a couple of humidifier cables and one of your MR10s this morning.

Typical Scot...I think we should revisit this thread after England lift the World cup yet again. Just because you have such a ****e team, one that will never again reach a major footballing championship, you have to have a whinge about the English, go on force yourself support the glorius former champions and stop your whinging.

Scotish commentators should be grateful to the BBC for allowing them to use words like 'we' and 'us', making them feel part of an occasion that they would never otherwise experience if when following a Scotish team.

Deary me such language frown The clue is in your rant "FORMER", stop living in the past man. England will get past the group stages only because they got such an easy group but after that I wouldn't fancy your chances with or without Shrek. As for us Scots were doing alright for a wee country. Now that we have got rid of Herr Berti our team is on the up (well lets face it they could hardly go down). After all Scotland are the last UK team to win silverware as we won the Kirin Cup in Japan two weeeks ago. shades Looking forward to this world cup smilewink England to win ? No don't think so my money is on Brazil.

Tell me William. You're good at arithmetic. What's 2066 - 1966? Does that make it 40 yrs since they were champions, thanks to home advantage and a blind linesman? I could have sworn it was only yesterday. eek eek

I must be the only Englishman involved with EBME and likes football (English football that is). 40 years wow, I suppose that does put things into perspective. However, back in 1314 their was a famous battle that Scotland won, and after living in Arbroath for a number of years, it must have been mentioned at least once a day to me, and re-enacted every Friday and Saturday night down town on any poor suspecting Englishman. So at least 40 years is relatively recent by comparison.

Ahh they were the days a pint of heavy and a smokeys...followed by a famous battle re-enactment.

Plenty of Englishman I think Rob I just can't be bothered retorting to Scotsmen over football.

It would be like arguing over cricket to a Yank or beach volleyball with an Eskimo.

At least our form of arithmetic is a liitle easier to work out instead of
"never will - never have"

Will we win? We've got as good a chance as anyone, including Brazil.

The bonus is we are not based around Hamburg, otherwise "Shrek" would have more than a sore foot.

Loc: Temporarily in "The Smoke" but...
I think endlessly talking about football is far more boring than cricket. :p
Sitting around in the sun with a beer watching a lot of other blokes running about. Can't beat it. cool
Sorry I forgot, you football types can't get a beer at a game.

The world cup and Big Brother on at the same time....AARRGGHHH!!!!
