Has anyone tried the sample test questions from the "Britishness Test" found on the Daily Telegraph website? (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/11/01/nbrit201.xml)

To pass you need to score 75%.

Thanks for that David. However, having scored just 55% I don't feel myself sufficiently English to pass this BRITISHNESS TEST!!!

I did say British and not English 'cos I didn't want anyone to feel excluded.

With hindsight, I should have just said "citizenship test", but this is the test to gain "British Citizenship", not "English Citizenship".

FWIW, I failed too and I've lived in ENGLAND (part of BRITAIN) for 40+ years.

I heard on radio 2 that one question asked is: Which of the following is the correct mains voltage for the UK?

1 100 volts
2 140 volts
3 240 volts.

As far as I'm aware its presently none of the above. Since the person preparing the questions can't get it right will he/she be deported or made to take "englishness" lessons?

You are indeed correct, according to "EC regulations" we are now on 230 Volts.

Why I hear you ask ?

Well as far as I am aware the voltage has not changed, but the level of tolerance has (ie 230 +/15 ish) rather than 240.

Our calibrated DMM measures over 240 volts anyway (maybe that's not calibrated to EC regulations !!)

Took the test and got 80%.
Does that mean that I'm allowed over Offa's dyke now?

Loc: Temporarily in "The Smoke" but...
When Britain joined the EEC the standards for voltages were changed. Previously the continent had run on 220volts and the UK on 240volts with fairly tight tolerances. The voltages were changed so that the whole EU ran on 230volts with broader tolerances which happened to cover from the lowest permitted 220volts to the highest 240volt tolerances.

Some countries actually wrote their local legislation to be 220volts minus a small tolerance plus a large one to comply with the EEC rules but to stop the local population complaining about EEC interference in local matters.
Don't you just love European harmony?

How long before the generators are tweaked to 230volts to provide us with less power but for the same unit charge? boggle

A Britishness question on radio 4 this morning:
If somone offers you a snake bite do you...
a) report them to the RSPCA
b) dial 999 or the alternative number that you know from the above question
c) drink it, have four more and wreck the local town

Doesn't it make you proud to be British?

Robert

An ability to speak an understandable version of the English language would be useful for the Britishness test
