Hi,
Could anyone tell me what should be an acceptable height (measured from a reclining patients' level) for installation of Aneroid Sphygmomanometer? We need to install new Aneroid Spygmomanometers for our Hemodialysis Unit.

Fit it to the “medi-rail” if one is available.

Otherwise, I would suggest 1200 FFL (ie, 1.2 metres above the finished floor level) so that the dial is easily viewed by a sitting nurse.

For more detailed advice, you would need to send an elevation drawing, or photograph, Khawar. smile

As these are not fluid based systems the height between the patient and device is not critical.

You should be looking to mount them at eye level to the operator to reduce parallax error.

As Geoff says 1.2 metre from floor level sound good.

In the UK, mercury is not aloud to be use any more. It all comes under the COSHH regulations.

Put them at the same height as any other sphygmomanometer, or as Geoff suggested: 1.2 metres

Dear Sajeev,
Aneroid or Digital Sphygmomanometers are fairly accurate and need to be calibrated once a year atleast, to ensure accuracy. Mercury filled Sphygmomanometers are not not allowed to be used in our hospital (also practised in other hospitals around the world) due to Mercury vapor toxicity.

The choice of type sphygmomanometer to be use will come down to cost. Aneroid are normally a lot cheaper than digital. It is always handy to have aneroid sphygmomanometer for patient with irregular heart rhythms.

The good thing about mercury sphyg’s is what you see is what you get. That is, millimetres of mercury!

And I imagine they’ll be around in India for a while yet. Regarding mounting height, for accurate results, you need to fix a mercury sphyg pretty much at the same level as the patient’s heart. smile
