Last time I was in Middlesbrough, I was saddened to find that it looked like an industrial waste-land. But they do have a nice hospital there! Cumbria is the beautiful far north-west of England, and is also home to some fine hospitals (as indeed is Gulu in Uganda)!

Regional accents remain a feature of the British Isles (I’m pleased to say) despite all the advances in mobility and communications (and at least it amuses the tourists)! But there again, the same can still be said of the Arab World, and Africa too, no doubt about it. smile

Geoff, our hospitals are not as fine as those in England, by the way have you visited Africa?or you are like the lads i talked to to come and visit and they were fearing saying we live with animals, there is war everywhere in Africa....?? Am surprised you already got to the Gulu independent hospital website, the internet has brought us together(Global world) Gulu independent hospital is expanding soon to Southern Sudan and the directors are based in London and Newyork all they are trying to do is provide better health care to Ugandans, but in Africa people can not afford health care and thats why life expectancy is too low.

Yes, roman, I did some work in Nigeria. That was 23 years ago now, but I imagine that conditions there are still much the same. Except that there was no internet then, of course. No mobile phones either!

I had a brief involvement many years ago too with the Kenana (Sugar Co.) Hospital in Southern Sudan. There was definitely a civil war going on then, Mate!

But personally, I would love to go back to Africa. smile

It looks you ve travelled alot and worked in many countries, thats great and Nigeria is a big country now the population is nearly 180 million, Uganda population is nearly 25million, but its HIV that has greatly reduced our population.

Thanks

Yes, the need for health care just increases all the time. HIV-AIDS is the major problem, but many others remain (malaria, TB to name but two). Meanwhile, those "lucky" enough to live in the West just get fatter!

Personally, I still haven't given up on the idea of the "World Tour". I have talked before about "biomeding around the world". One final fling, then, maybe next year. I envisage travelling light with just a tool bag and a few things. Anyone want to join me? Or, more to the point, anyone want to sponsor the trip? Ha, ha. smile

Let the Biomeding tour get you to Uganda also we will wellcome you in the pearl of Africa, in Uganda we had formed an association of Biomedical engineers and Technicians but this collapsed due the funding it collapsed 6 years ago when DANIDA withdrew sponsorship , we still need to revive it but lurk sponsorship, but the Biomed guys here are still very few and even in the Country no Instution of learning has started training in that area, some o us who have managed to get trainings abroad are still lucky, its then us who would train others

Dear Roman,
this site is really good and i have already registered some of my friends. It is a great asset and boon for biomedical engineers and technicians from the third world countries where i too reside. We do not possess special caliberation tools or maintenance equipment but the suggestions and advice really helps in identifying the problem.
This forum has provided a platform for everybody to share their views and opinions regarding to medical equipment and other aspects. We thank you guys, for giving us such a platform.
A visit from our biomed frens from abroad can also contribute in learning and sharing the experiences which is very valuable for us.
Thanking you guys once again.

Billy is right, guys ... this thread is meant to be about vacancies in Cumbria. Don't be afraid to open a new thread (topic) in the most appropriate forum section when necessary. If we don't do that, we end up literally "loosing the thread" of what we're supposed to be talking about (as we did here)! smile

I've been watching the thread (as usual) but I didn't feel the need to moderate it, as the initial post was an announcement rather than a question.

Had a response been requested, I would have asked for things to be kept 'on track'.

Here at the West Cumberland Hospital its a nice 14 Celsius. So no one fancy a job on the the edge of the beautiful Lake District? The hospital is just a hop, skip and a jump from the Ennerdale Valley and just up from Wasdale, the birth place of rock climbing.

Sounds idyllic (don't suppose you have a web-cam set up there, by any chance?). And with all that activity going on nearby, I should imagine that you have quite a busy Orthopaedics Department!

The advert for the two post only went out on Wednesday and as of yet not even an inquring phone call.

It would be great if was added to the jobs page, thank you Huw.

As for the Wasdale webcams . It looks a bit cloudy at the moment.

Hello

It`s himself here (the boss of the aforementioned department in a beautiful corner of England).
After the tours of the various continents and the diversion from the topic I`ve had a couple of encouraging enquiries for the jobs, so the EBME website certainly came in handy there.
As for the merits of the area, I`m working at the West Cumberland Hospital today, and the journey home might be the road to Lorton, over the Whinlatter Pass to Bassenthwaite then across the Northern Fells via Uldale and Caldbeck to Carlisle, probably beats the M25 for scenery, but there`s a lot of sheep to dodge (or catch - if you`re so inclined).

Depends on your mode of transport Geoff. However I must say that I got snowed in more often in 3 years living in Suffolk than I have up here (not once) in 15 years.

just remember to bring an umbrella for the horizontal rain and a warm coat (for the southeners). Saying that we are basking in the sun today, must be summer has turned up at last.

What you have to know is Dave (Dicky) lives out near Allonby on the Cumbrian coast where warm gentle breezes blowing off the gulf stream warmed sea sigh through the palm trees, so he wouldn`t be snowed in that often

Can you see Calder Hall from where you are, Dicky? That video clip is worth worth spending three minutes with. No hard hats in those days, Mate. And doesn't our young Queen look so chic? Of course, the real reasons for Britain's (and, as was the nature of things fifty years ago, the world's) first productive nuclear power station were a bit sinister. frown

Is the railway station still thriving at Sellafield, I wonder?

Just for a bit of balance, take a look at this.

In my travels around England, it seems to me that half the country is being rejuvenated. Bad though some of the development is (in my opinion, that is), I reckon that it's still better than being left derelict! For instance, has anyone else wandered around Gloucester Docks recently, or seen the transformation at the site of the old coal-fired power station at Portishead (near Bristol)?

England has a great and glorious past, no doubt about it. But at least you can breathe the air these days. Yes, there is always hope for the future! smile
