Geoff, if I wanted to forward this simple idea of using the post code as part of the ID Tagging, which department in the 'great' NHS should I start with?

Hi all
CHCxxx stands for Chest Clinic and is followed by an item number eg.123, other equipment numbers start with a discription of what the kit is eg. INF (infusion pump), SYR (syringe pump) this helps us when the ward clark or new junior member of staff rings up to describe a fault and has no idea what the kit is.

Tom.

If you have a database and you enter the asset number, this should tell you what the equipment is, and the current location, then you can print the service order. We have been talking about equipment that has somehow been mislaid and has found it's way to other establishments, how do they identify the owner. Using the post code followed by your asset number is the simplest of ideas that actually does work.

Not so much mislaid I would say Neil, as transient. Under the modern healthcare for the masses paradigm we can expect more and more medical equipment to be travelling around with the patient, wherever s/he may roam. So why not think about a central NHS Agency tracking (that is, taking care of) all this stuff? In fact, why not doing just that for all NHS equipment assets?

There is also an increasing amount of medical equipment "out there in the community". We also see "point of care" (as in, at the ...) equipment that not so long ago would have been found only in hospital clinical labs, now becoming almost commonplace in patients' homes (nursing homes, and all the rest).

So yes, those responsible for supporting all this kit need to "think again", as it were, about (not only) tagging, but also how to maintain it all in general.

A lot of this kit is battery powered (or DC powered off a mains charger), so the traditional "electrical safety warrior" may need to think again as well (that is, but I digress ... there is more to PM that just a "Rigel* test")!

It's a whole new ball game, methinks. And, perhaps, a whole new market. It's just a thought ... but maybe the traditional hospital-based biomed department is rapidly becoming er, "yesterday's news"! EBME? Man, it's so 20th Century! whistle

But what about the idea of equipment that "reports back" (announces its presence), as it were. I guess, Neil, that you missed this earlier diatribe ... still very much "a work in progress" (aka on the back-burner) I'm afraid.

And perhaps I had better mention straight off the bat ... when it comes to implementation (development, whatever) of the GLIB idea, I shall be looking for 50% (at least)! smile

* Note: other medical equipment electrical safety testers may be available!

Aeroscout, has just a device, I think that if you used it at home you would need to connect it to broadband, as with asset numbers, postcode to define the hospital, a 6 digit number to define location/department/equipment type/model/etc.
Back to your GLIB as mentioned above you need a device that connects to the internet and updates in the same way that anti-virus and application software updates work, most digital radiography works this way, but I cannot see the time when everyone has there own x=ray machine in the house. Most equipment though could use he same technology and be red flagged should an error occur or the PPM is due.
Glad to see you've uppped the ante from 10%
