A Fisher Paykel CPAP Humidifier, Ser No 080314008255, has turned up at TSS Papworth Hospital. It has an equipment label with the identifier CHC.804 and was last checked in June 2008 by H.S. Have contacted F&P but they are unable to help. Any ideas which hospital this belongs to? Chris Birch 01480 364949

I see this several times and was wondering is there a better way to track or labelled where the origin is?

Yes ... how about the adoption of a standard asset coding system throughout the National Health Service? Hint:- the first three characters should identify the hospital. You see ... I keep coming up with these genius (better make that "obvious" in actual fact) suggestions ... and what happens? Zilch! Next "problem", please!

Could be a bit embarrassing Geoff if you work in Titchworth General or Coklebang PCT

Personally, I am suprised that F&P can't tell you the trust they sold it to. Even if they sold it to another company, if they told you who, it would give you something to go on.

I should imagine that CHC is a local code for "Chest Clinic". No Neil, it's a bit difficult to see how E11 1NR becomes CHC. How about E11-1NR-CHC-1234? Don't tell me, it's too long! That is:- Post Code (with a "-" to replace the <space>) followed by another "-" followed by whatever code is preferred locally. Obviously (I hope) the 1234 is a sequential number series (0001 to 9999). Using such a format, the code for the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (for example) would be:- GL1-3NN-GRH-1234And Rotherham General Hospital would be something like:- S60-2UD-RGH-1234And (just one more), The Cumberland Infirmary could use:- CA2-7HY-NCUH-1234Actually, the NCUH portion is (in all cases) redundant, but it might help to make that part of the code more "readable", as it were. If a shorter code is required, simply use (in this case):- CA2-7HY-1234It works for me! ... the last time I saw an asset label with " CHCxxx " was from Ealing Hospital ... Chest Clinic, yes. But the wrong hospital. Try:- UB1-3HW-CHCxxxI rest my case.
