Two bytes per error code, rather than many. Not to mention all the language possibilities. Although those codes are held in the Main Processor (I believe), everything else (such as config settings) is in an EPROM, remember, so there's only 256 K available (I think it is) for anything fancy, such as interpretation of the codes.

You might get error 91 if someone was pressing a key when the pump was switched on, so you might not be able to see a specific cause for the error. Try it for yourself just to confirm it.
