I am looking to get some feedback on the various Tympanic thermometers in the market at the moment.

We are currently using the Genius 2 having upgraded from the Genius 1 and have had nothing but problems, not that the previous model was any better.

So what are people using is it up to the job and actually doing what it says in the spec sheet.....?

We are currently trying to be rail roaded into taking the Genius 2 thermometer, but the Covidien rep has been stopped in his tracks because we have have to go to tender grin

I think the comments regarding the Genius 1 were a little unfair as they only come in for 1 of 3 reasons:

1 - Battery needs replacing - so we replace and cal check.
2 - reading low - User error - because the tip is covered in ear wax
3 - reading incorrectly - user abuse - because they had dropped it and cracked the tip.

apart from that the genius was a good little device. boggle

Not impressed by the Genius 2 or the price of its temp checking test gear £1200?.Note,a checker not a calibrator.

We got the Braun Pro4000 from Welch Allyn. No problems, good support and the disposables are cheap. Compare prices in the NHS procurement catalogue.
The themometers were free as it any repair or replacement including ones that "go for a walk".
Can't do better than that on price.

We were on Genius 1 and changed to Genius 2. Supposed to be more stable, more robust, and longer battery life - seemed like a good deal at the time. We've had problems with calibration (failing on the checker) and battery life. Catches on the side of the base unit break easily - seems to a fatigue problem with the plastic. Repair turnround sometimes erratic but Covidien have provided service spares. Support from Covidien local rep has been good but overall the change has been slightly disappointing.

How could you forget Alaris? frown

There is also the Radiant from Merlin Medical.

And the Omron GT-510 (GT for "Gentle Temp" ... see this .pdf).

Welcome to the forum, James. smile

Slightly off topic ... but I noticed this nice little doodad at one of the links you gave.

This could be the "future" I reckon ... the government (taxpayer) provides the funding, and the "user" (patient, hypochondriac, consumer ... or better yet, all 3-in-1) orders his (her) "essential home care" products, on line (of course). Who knows, the average household will end up with more kit than we were used to in an ICU ten or twenty years ago!

So what about the traditional biomed? Forget all that ... the future will be making house calls, and taking abuse from the deeply deserved poor souls who dwell there ... you know, just like the plumber (and hopefully at similar hourly rates)! Hint:- watch out for the dogs (the small yappy ones usually being the worst).

By the way I mention "taking abuse" as I have heard the sorry stories from a friend who works as an installer - come service engineer - for a well-known manufacturer of stair lifts. Perhaps he had had a bad day (week, year) ... but he didn't mention the word "gratitude" once! I hadn't realised, but (listening to this guy) it sounds like Council tenants get all this stuff for free. Fair enough, you might say ... and I would say that too ... just as long as everyone (including me) had a Council flat ready and waiting to be moved into.

No doubt it's a similar story with all this other mobility and "home care" stuff as well. That is - I pay for it, but will never get any benefit from it (apart from, if I'm lucky, having a go at fixing it). Just another facet of the Wonderful Society that those of us fortunate to live in Bonkers Britain get to endure ... er, I mean enjoy. frown

Meanwhile (back at the thread), are you talking about the Omron GT-510, James? Selftester? Yes, it kinda supports what I'm trying to get at, does it not? Next thing you know they'll be selling the test kit (as in electrical safety testers - or "PAT Testers" as they would no doubt call them) as well! Maybe this is the way forward (and it looks like it could be) ... who knows?
