There again if someone is disillusioned, demotivated and not committed to their current job, what is going to change them overnight if they start looking at other opportunities??!!

OK, let's meander! I've been engaged in a bit of discourse on another forum about the possibility of having kit sent for repair all the way from Down Under. Apparently it could be financially viable using modern courier options. Something like less than £ 100 (including insurance etc.) for up to ten kilos, taking about four days. All this is starting me wondering if there could be any mileage in inviting repairs from such far flung parts of the globe. I would like to be able to farm work out to other sheds, as appropriate ... let pumps be done by the most cost-effective "pump boys", for example. Who, in theory, could be anywhere in the world! At the moment we do a fair amount of repair work on stuff that arrives by courier (any, or all of them) from all corners of the British Isles. We fix it (well, usually) then "ship" it back. Today the UK ... tomorrow the world! OK (in anticipation of the next question) ... but perhaps we ourselves should be based somewhere else ... you know, at a "nice" location. Cyprus comes to mind, for some reason. OK ... and now, back to Maverick (anyone else out there remember that?).

Is it when you are disillusioned, demotivated and not committed to their current job that you start looking round for a new job? Robert

I’m sure this isn’t the case with Geoff’s advert but normally the statement “An exciting opportunity exists for an enthusiastic, self motivated and committed individual" is given with a job advert for the following reasons. You need to be enthusiastic because this is a bloomin' boring job.
Self motivated because the boss has no management skills and zero personality.
Committed because you should be if you go for this job.

How can you follow a badly managed establishement? Does this mean the only option left is to "get outta the way and leave?"
im sure the "An exciting opportunity exists for an enthusiastic, self motivated and committed individual" exsists in any and every job you could ever think of. Is this the usual BS(baboon speak) buzz phrase? lol i think so!

Whether to follow (or not) is up to the sheep concerned. But they do usually trail on behind, do they not? But yes, that saying could also be offering good advice along the lines of:- "... get out of the way (of the door)!" But please be clear that we don't always need to blindly (unthinkingly, and without comment) follow the Leader. In fact, the informed leader should always step back when necessary to give full rein to any other within the group who is able to take the lead (special skills, whatever) as each occasion demands. As I may have said before, the wise person should be careful who he works for. If only because the credo of the organisation (the company, whatever) may be seen by observers to have rubbed-off onto (and supported by) the individual! Or, if you like, tarred with the same brush. I'm not a great supporter of BS myself, and the "exciting opportunity" phrase is a tad over-used. However, such jobs do exist. When you work in Teams (as many of us do), "team building" itself is indeed an "exciting opportunity" for the Real Leader. Frankly, it's the raw material which is (and seemingly always has been) in short supply. Perhaps I need to qualify that:- I mean, "in the UK".

Yes but Geoff that is the difference between ex-mil and NHS Indoctrinated management. I personnally always feel less is more when it comes to management. Less management more work throughput, most of the people out there are capable of doing the job so let them get on with it. You do not need to stand over someone to make sure a job is done. (It can also be construed as bullying) Due to people having to justify their existance we end up with more paperwork than an Andrex factory and as much use.
Sorry to have got off subject. You have to put that phrase in as 'Dull as dishwater so if you have any drive dont bother' doesn't really get you the best candidates.
I always feel that the person who you employ should not only have the ability to do the job but they have to get on with who is already employed.
Motivated = You get off your arse and find something when it is quiet. Enthausiastic = Has ideas to improve the place, maybe even bring new ideas from previous employment. Committed = As already stated it helps!!

I can't disagree with any of that, Billy. As you say, good management should be (and indeed, is) transparent. Like government, it should be minimal, in my opinion. OK ... I'll amend the next ad. to include something like:- "Only those considered dull as dishwater need apply"! Ha, ha.

Now that Billy's gone home, I hope I can get away with reminding folk that the original phrase was:- "As dull as ditchwater"! So, be sure to look out for that one in the next job ad. you see!
