I have been told that any device used on a patient should have its serial/asset number recorded in the patient notes so that should any adverse event happen to the patient that particular device can be identified and investigated. I was told that this recommendation followed from the Beverley Allitt saga.
Can anyone point me to the original of this guidance/recommendation?
Thanks
RoJo

Sounds like Common Sense to me. whistle

Not sure how it would have helped in the case(s) you allude to though, Robert. It was hardly the kit that was at fault, was it? frown

I agree it is common sense but for a policy one needs to quote a reference.
But it does mean you can go and look through the correct log if there is a suspected incident to show what did happen.

Good luck with that each patient would need a P.A whilst in surgery. love to see it happen but I wouldn't believe anyone who said it happens 100% of the time.

Yes I have heard about recording as quoted many times by nursing staff but this normally only refers to major machines CTG’s and Anaesthetic machines etc.

Try theatre nurses as a point of reference they may be able to help they find it useful to record what’s used for when things go missing.
