I would like to get details of which equipment I need, the pricing and the supplier of calibration equipment for medical devices. I have 'googled' and all I get is "send your equipment to us" type messages. I am trying to put a proposal together so any help would be welcome, thanking you in advance.

Thinking of having a go yourself, then, Neil? Expensive! My first thoughts are:- whatever instruments you go for, they will all themselves need to be calibrated against a "higher level" - eg, ultimately traceable to the National Physical Laboratory or whatever. Do you have such a body out there? And who runs (owns) it? MODA, I wonder? And what (if anything) are the other Big Healthcare Providers out there doing in this regard? Off the top of my head, I would have thought that one medical equipment calibration lab should be able to serve the whole Kingdom ... with, perhaps, just "cal checks" (in spec/out of spec) checks being carried out locally.

All hospitals, companies are now chasing accreditation, there are standards organizations including weights and measures. The companies are sending their instruments abroad for calibration and this is expensive, there are people here willing to invest in the creation of a calibration laboratory and the business potential is huge!
Three labs would be perfect, Damman, Jeddah and Riyadh.
Geoff do you have any clues as to where I can find the equipment?

What exactly are you hoping to do, Neil ... set up a lab to carry out annual calibrations on biomed test kit? If you were to approach one the companies already doing that in the UK (or USA, wherever) with the "promise" of a Joint Venture, or some other incentive, I'm sure you would be able to obtain all the information you require. For instance:- you could try Young's. You could also speak to Rigel ... and Ultramedic. Otherwise, you're going to have to sit down and work out your own calibration methods. And from that, the equipment you will need. Much more fun doing it that way, I would have thought!

Not only biomedical test equipment, but all measuring equipment. The idea is to set up an independent laboratory complete with certification, instead of sending the equipment abroad DO IT HERE.

Mr porter its really a good idea for buisness as well as for hospitals and companies who needs an urgent calibration to set standards... there is a variety of these equipments.but it will be expansive.

My bet is that someone is already doing it. As long ago as 1987 I remember some French company in Jubail doing all our biomed test kit. If I were you I would check with the oil companies, Neil. Jubail, Yanbu for starters. ARAMCO must have some sort of instrument calibration laboratory, for sure. Other than that, do you really want to upset the status quo (as in the various parties with a vested interest in keeping matters as they currently stand)? If my experiences "out there" are anything to go by, it's probably far better (if you want to survive) to keep your head down. Why not just start off in a small way, and take it from there? If I were you I would begin by calibrating electrical safety testers, and maybe multimeters (plus voltmeters, and so forth) and see how you get on with that.

Geoff, this is not for me, I am getting the information for a company I am acting as a consultant. The more companies, hospitals we speak to the more we find out how much calibration is being done abroad!

Off topic for a while (sorry Neil):- yes, the Netech range has really grown, and it now covers "almost everything" (in biomed terms). But it looks like a lot of that stuff is bought in from elsewhere ... unless Netech is in fact the OEM (and others re-brand their stuff). There again, the way things are these days, I often wonder who is the OEM of what (and for whom) - for most equipment!

Hi Neil, Am based in Abu Dhabi UAE and we send our tools for calibration to Arabian Calibration and Dev. Rep. Co. LLC . Website: http://www.arabcal.com/I've talked with our contact person there and she said that they also sell calibration equipment. If you are interested, her name is Maria and her phone number is +971554132136 . Good luck on your project.

Look any large engineering company ie BAE, BABCOCK, THALES, have a dedicated calibration centre, so as an independent small engineering company wishing to supply other firms with calibration requirements, all you have to is ensure that you can cal your kit with these firms, then calibrate your clients with this equipment. Don't think that you are restricted to purely medical engineering companies. Radio graphics, well seeing BAE do it on a daily basis on submarines, well you see where we are going, this is engineering, you are an engineer, sometimes look for a solution in the engineering world and not in the medical one.

Neil is in Jeddah. I know Neil from "the Old Days", and can confirm his long experience, so no doubt he understands the principles of calibration (traceability, and all the rest). Kit out there still gets calibrated (by and large), but often the test kit (and sometimes the medical equipment itself) needs to be sent overseas to be re-certified. Yes, there are industrial cal labs around "out there" (but not too many submarines). But I expect that Neil was looking for someone to offer him a list of test (calibration lab) kit, complete with suppliers' details, so he can have a go at setting up a cal lab in-house to serve the hospitals and clinics within his bailiwick. So here we have a case where Neil is hoping for something that he has often complained about when replying to the posts of others ... that is, presenting him with a quick and easy answer! As I may have observed before:- "if it was that easy, everyone would be doing it"!
