We are looking to equip a new hospital being built by a charitable organisation in a remote, poor and under-privileged part of the world.

We are hoping for out-right donations, but funding can sometimes be found in special cases. All types of hospital equipment is needed, but at present there is a particular need for ophthalmic instruments.

Rest assured that any such equipment will be bound only to the hospital out there in Asia. Any surpluses will be offered to other hospitals within the group (and, if not needed there - very unlikely - to other charities), but will never be seen again outside the so-called developing world. Any asset tagging etc. will be removed during the pre-inspection process prior to filling up the sea-container!

Collection can be arranged from all over the UK. We will also pick up unwanted spare parts, service manuals etc. This will be an on-going requirement, so don't just bung it in the skip – someone else can put it to good use! \:\)

That’s the spirit, Laiq. I reckon that a co-operative approach is probably the best way to assist these guys, and similar organizations. There’s only so much one person can do, especially when operating in charity mode. I envisage a few guys pushing from this end (ie, UK) and blokes like your good self pulling at the other, if you get my meaning.

I have given my views on donating equipment before (for instance, see this thread ). I just can’t see how packing up random equipment (which could well be junk) and packing it off overseas helps anyone. What I’m hoping for is to set in train some sort of rational procedure whereby only equipment actually needed is collected at this end, and then checked-out, repaired (etc.) before shipping (together with manuals, parts etc. if at all possible).

It would be nice to know that someone would be available at the receiving end to carry things on out there. Although people like myself used to enjoy the adventure (shall we say) of travelling out to remote areas, I’m not sure that this is actually the most efficient way of delivering the technical services people need (ie, it can take a while for visiting techs to get up to speed, to a point whereby the expense involved in travelling etc. actually pays off).

Yes, Mate, let’s see what we can do. It could be a new beginning, and (who knows) we may be able to do a bit of good! \:\)

We are loading up a container-load of equipment over the next couple of weeks for shipment to Karachi, and then onward to Kashmir. But now that the better weather is with us once again (?), it’s time to resume the collection of equipment for charitable causes such as Al-Ain. There is also a continuing need for unwanted (by you perhaps, but not by us) manuals, tools, test equipment and spare parts. Naturally, we would prefer if these were donated, but otherwise we may be able to raise funds necessary to purchase.

This year, I’m wondering if we could take things to a higher level by getting hold of a decent combined warehouse and workshop where equipment could be mustered, and if necessary worked upon, and prepared for shipment. I would like this to be a common facility, for use by any or all charitable groups, with biomeds volunteering their time and expertise if they feel so inclined. Not too much of a pipe-dream, I hope! \:\)

I think it is a very worthy cause and I hope you find somewhere. Unfortunately our facilities would be too small for this kind of venture but i will let our technicians know that you will be looking for some volunteers once you have found somewhere. I will also allow them some extra leave to do this if they wish too. (number of days per tech yet to be decided) I may come along myself for a couple of day if required, Good luck, John. \:\)

That’s very big-hearted of you, John. Yes, I would like to find a place where techs could come along and “play” outside of the constraints of their normal working environment, and at the same time doing a bit of good, as it were, in repairing and preparing equipment destined for overseas charities. We have used a semi-derelict dairy in Rotherham, but it is hardly ideal (might be a bit more pleasant during the summer months, hopefully).

Frankly, though, the trouble with charity work is that it doesn’t pay the bills (ie, mine)! Do you think any of your sponsors might be able to help out there (ie, they front the money, and we do the work)? If we had a bit of funding, I’m sure we could achieve a great deal. Perhaps this could be something for us all to think about? \:\)

Another year, but we're still waiting to hear from sponsors! Meanwhile, here's the current link. The "man behind the show" is an esteemed gentleman called Abdul Ghani. At an age when others would be either on the golf course, or riding around on their mobility scooter, he is out in the mountains of Azad Kashmir, almost single-handedly building a community hospital (having already purchased, and then donated, the land). He is a man worthy of the greatest respect and admiration!

My own humble involvement has been minimal (especially when compared to the likes of Abdul Ghani), limited only to a few equipment repairs. But we hope to grow the team into something a bit more organized in time for the next venture. Equipment donations trickle in from time to time, but it's all a bit haphazard. As I've said before, what I would like to see is a "central clearing house" (read:- shed) where anyone happy to donate equipment (and/or parts, manuals, test equipment ... or even time) could send stuff to (or have it collected from). From there, equipment could be prepared (repaired, made complete etc.), and then offered to the group most needing it. But frankly, we need a shed, and we need sponsorship! \:\)

That's very generous of you, Mate. I might just take you up on that, once I've cleared a bit of space in a shed about 45 miles from where you are! \:\)
