Hi,
Iam a Biomedical Engineer working at a Hospital In Dubai. I am planning to appear for the CBET Examination at the end of the year.
I need to know more about the exam and further job opportunities. Is it mandatory for Engineers like me to write this exam to work in u.k and u.s.a

Regards,

Sajesh

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the CBET Examination?

Glad someone else asked that as I was thinking exactly the same.
Currently there are no restrictions that apply to technicians working in the NHS. If you prove yourself good enough at the interview then that is sufficient.
But have a look at the many threads about the registration of technicians. Soon you will have to be registered to call yourself a clinical technologist. This registration involves proof of a level of education plus experience.

CBET ...Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician. I think this is the basic qualification for working in the USA. The exams & certification are managed through AAMI I believe.

Yes, as usual our friends in the States are way ahead. Their certification system is vocationally based (the exam questions are based on real-world, need-to-know stuff), and has practical application. It is not just another piece of paper for “educated idiots”.

Why aren’t we pushing for something like this in the UK (along with the similar certification exams for x-ray and lab), instead of pursuing the “Clinical Technologist” nonsense that I see plastered all over this website? \:\)

I agree that their system seems to be better tailored to the vocational nature of "our" jobs.

For anyone who is interested, the web site is:

I thought IPEM where putting together a training scheme for Clinical Technologists which was to be hands-on training. I will see what I can find out and post my findings.

The grass is NOT always greener. CBET is in no way a Prerequisite for employment in the US. I have only a two year electronics degree and others I know in the field have even less. There is a huge gap in biomed training and precedure due to geographical divergence. Rural hospitals like the one I work at hire anyone that they think might be able to do the job.

Bioman,
I have heard that there is a disagreement between IPEM and the DoH. IPEM want the training part of the registration process to be job based with release for education. The government want the training to be college based with release for work experience.
This disagreement has led to some delays in getting things sorted and hence no definite word on the compulsary register as yet.
Personally I am behind the IPEM on this one.
We all know how good nurse training has become now the colleges have taken over and it is no longer ward based.

Make the training for practical jobs practical.

And I thought apprenticeships were back in favour, just with the word "modern" infront of it.
