Twenty-five years ago I looked at the ECRI standard nomenclature. I (we) tried it for a while, then dropped it. Now we have this GMDN thing. It looks to me like European "harmonization". So I think I'll stick with my own system (that is, calling equipment what it actually is, supported by manufacturer name and model).
But if you are building a database, may I suggest including a field covering "what the nurses call it", so when they call (citing a common example), an NIBP Monitor a dinamap, people (eg, help-desk, booking-in staff, admin types, etc.) know what they are talking about.
