We have recently moved onto the Genius 2 from the earlier model. We have been experiencing problems with wards reporting the units reading higher than the older model. Has anyone had similar experiences.

Joe it may be the equivalence setting on your new thermometers is different from your original units settings. There are three settings on the First temp plus ... Oral, Rectal, and Core. If your new units are set differently this could be the reason for the higher readings.

No, this is not the problem. All units were setup to 'Oral', the same as the old Genius 3000A's. This has been ruled out as the problem.

Firstly, thank you for choosing the Genius 2 tympanic thermometer.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask you to call your local Covidien (formerly Tyco Healthcare) sales representative who will happily address these questions.

Our Company contacts database may help.

Just do a keyword search on tyco for a list of (Covidien) reps.

Loc: NOT SURE
We are about to change over to Genius 2 units & have been told by Covidien (TYCO)to set them all to EAR mode as this is the most accurate way of taking a consistant reading. All of the old Genius units that are being replaced are set to ORAL. Coviden have told us that all of the new Genius 2's are set to EAR mode.
Is this not correct - how do other hospitals have theirs set ???

The old Genius 1 units could be calibrated on-site - the relevant PCB and calibrator were supplied foc. For the Genius 2, there is a 'field checker' available for £1200.00 that literally only checks that the unit is within calibration limits.

Advice from the rep was that the user should check their own temperature first before checking the patients for a comparison. Otherwise the unit goes to Ballymoney.

Is this really progress ... or yet another case of "one step forward, two steps back"? (hint:- other thermometers are available) \:\)

Good question Minitech.
Does this mean that the Oral equivalent on the Genius 2 is a different equivalent to the Oral equivalent on a Genius 3000A?
My understanding was that the EAR setting is for obtaining an absolute reading from the tympanic membrane.
