All of our "job time" is recorded on our system but the management say that they will not use it to admonish individuals. They realise that The time put down on the job sheet does not cover all of our time. If we were to charge for individual jobs we would have to factor in all of our overheads including the non recordable "managers' time". The question should be "how do we record the hours worked by managers and admin staff"?
As a contractor it is easy to make sure that your time is accurately recorded, most contractors only work on one or two jobs at a time. At present I am juggling 16 jobs, down from 24 this morning.
I'll add 1/2 hour for this post.
As for contracting out biomed services It always works out more expensive compared to the in-house service. All you need is the right management. Hmmm, I guess you got me there!

Yes, Mate, well and truly snookered, if you don't mind me saying!

It's the same old story, Bill ... in many ways biomeds have always been their own worst enemy but being "too useful" (etc.). But, don't get me wrong, I've always believed that's how things should be. It "goes with the turf", as they say. If an engineer, tech (or manager, come to that), feels more comfortable in what could be termed "an industrial environment", let them go there!

What I don't understand (and, to be frank, have always fought against), is why managers in healthcare related positions want to treat the hospital (and its workers) as if it were a factory!

Lastly, Mate ... if your department were contracted out (let's say), what makes you think that the contractor wouldn't be working under the same sort of pressures that you bear? The job would still be the same, but (hopefully) the contractor would have the resources to do it justice (notice that I didn't say properly, there). How? Because during the bidding process, all this stuff would need to be threshed out, costed, and priced accordingly. As long as good old boys (if you catch my drift) continue to struggle on and "make it fit", absolutely no real progress will be made, and "management" will continue to smugly tick all the boxes (and, no doubt, pat each other heartily on the back for a job well done)!

Yes, contracting out always works out more expensive, because:-

that's what it really costs to provide a quality service! \:\)

Dear Bill,
Having been in this situation many, many years ago it all started well with 0.25 of an hour here and 0.75 of an hour there. Eventually you spend more time filing out paperwork and trying to think up how you spent that 10 minutes on the phone to HP than actually doing the job. In the end I ended up filling out my time sheet 9am to 12.30 WORK - 1.30 to 5.30 WORK. It was
the only way to make real sense of what I did!
Having been out of the good ship NH of S for some time it is one thing I do not miss, my time being better spent actually fixing things...................................

Bravo! Ed. I think we're all agreed on that one. And I notice that we've yet to see any form of rebuttal from any of the management types out there! \:\)

Its often common practice to service two identical units simultaneously! How do you log your time here! And be honest!
