Hi all
I have just been told to subtract 5 hours credit off my Timesheet because i am apparently not entitled. The five hours was ammassed as travel time on a recent Technical training course, ie. my day was over 5 hours longer than usual (not including normal home to base travel). All attendees agreed on the 5 hours (which was rouunded down) and recorded them on our WTD spreadsheets. Management have noticed, queried it with HR and concluded there shall be no compensation for this time. I'm very dissapointed with this and wonder if anyone else has experienced or has knowledge of it. A couple of guys have "spent" this credit and now find themselves in debt timewise.

We normally have to agree in writing any time we are going to claim for before we go on the course.
E.G 3hrs to get there 3hrs to get back, on top of usual 7.5hr day.
On top of any meal allowance and mileage claim estimation.
I know this isnt what you probably want to hear. But this is since someone stuck a claim in for something like 20hrs due to the course being at the opposite end of the country and getting stuck in traffic both ways and travelling time between venue / hotel over 5 days.

I have had a similar problem 3 years ago.
The question I initially asked (having recently started in the post) was were we paid overtime or got time back. I was told that we got neither but we were to work the appropriate number of hours per week.
Having attended a training course that meant getting home 3 hours later than normal I had counted this into my overall time for the week.
The Head of Department was adamant that this didn't count towards our total hours. At which point he was told in no uncertain terms that no more training courses would be undertaken and Bye Bye for now, I'm going home because I have completed 37 1/2 hours for this week!!!!
I never heard anything else. It was obvious that he was totally inflexible and just wanted to make a point.
Under you Terms & Conditions, I think you will find that once you have completed your allotted hours for the week, you can finish. Certainly, travel time to courses counted under Whitley rules but I don't know about under AfC.

These days Trusts tend to say that they are granting you paid leave to attend training courses, i.e. the course is all in your time, but they will give you a days leave to attend. This is great for the Trust but not so good for staff except in as far as you're more likely to be able get permission to go. At one point my Trust tried getting staff to pay the course fees etc. for training as it was deemed to be beneficial to staff, but that dropped when people refused to go.
Unfortunately AFC doesn't cover study leave so employers are freeish to do what they can get away with

Well I have spent numerous hours on the motorway going to Philips,Drager & all the others in my own time in the last 10 years. This issue has never been raised in our department and there are a fair number off us. It will be an issue from now on and I totally agree that travel time should be included. I would say that lieu time would be our option because there is a blanket ban on overtime.

This sort of thing doesn't affect me, so I'll keep out of it, except to ask just one question:- \:\)

"How do the doctors (and, for that matter, the managers) get treated when they are required to travel (in similar circumstances, and for similar reasons)"?

Jeddah to Berlin! and back again! "Happy Days"!
Being serious though we operate a "Business leave" system!
Travel, food and accomodation is all paid for by "The Company".
I think its fair as its the attendee who gets the most benefit (CV expansion etc)!

We are up in arms about this at the moment. Originally we were under the Estates dept. and we were able to claim back travelling time, at overtme rates if it was out of normal hours. We were then put under Medical Physics who were adamant that we could not claim for travelling to and from training courses. There was a notional agreement that you could leave early to prepare etc. The problem Medical Physics have is that most of the courses that they go on are purely for self improvement i.e. gaining CPD points or academic courses. They don't understand that the manufacturers' training courses we go on are for the benefit of the trust/ hospital. The benefit being that we can save the trust money directly as a result of attending these courses. It can be argued that whilst attending manufacturers' training courses we are actually working and travelling time is part of this. We (our trust) are in the process of rewriting our study leave policy. I'll report back when it is finalised.

That's torn it, Eddie ... now you've been and dragged me back in! I'm totally against any notion that "it'll look good on the CV"! So what if it does (or, in my experience, doesn't)? Sorry, old mate, but that's completely the wrong line to take (in my humble ... etc.).

In fact, I agree whole-heartedly with what Bill has just said ... courses, and the travelling involved (which does, after all, involve an element of risk) are both work! \:\)

I can only speak from my experience here Geoff! Factory trained "potentials" tend to get on the short list! especially if we are using kit in question. Again I am only speaking from my own personal experience! Please don't shoot the messenger! He's actually a very sympathetic chap!

Ed

PS besides being an relatively experienced biomed, I am also a UK registered AP for medical gases and a UK registered biological safety cabinet inspector! SANG paid for this! I thank them most gratefully! (sorry )
