There was no point in resurrecting a seven year old thread simply because it had the word 'Overseas' in the title.---------------------------------------------------------------------------
General apologies for resurrecting this thread - but it was the only one I could find with "Overseas" in the title.
But apart from that (having just re-read it) the post immediately above is probably worth a second airing!
However, my real reason for posting is this:- someone mentioned recently that (if you are British), new laws will now mean you would be wasting your time in seeking help from the Consulate should you get into trouble overseas. In fact (I am told) that British law now takes the view that it is your own fault should you be arrested overseas.
As many will remember, "getting into trouble" can take many forms in some places overseas. It isn't always just [censored]-up idiots falling off balconies. Sometimes blokes just going about their normal work (or business) can fall foul of the locals. Traffic accidents come immediately to mind. Not to mention "false accusations".
In my experience, the Consulate was never overly helpful to expats (in fact, I never bothered even "registering" with them when in places like Saudi Arabia) ... but can this latest news be true? I have tried a quick
Google search but failed to find anything supporting what I have been told.
Perhaps the guy was trying to wind me up (it wouldn't be the first time); but does anyone have any reliable information about any of this?
