Martin,
I was only discussing this at lunch time with somone as we are starting up a library here. We agreed that the job of a librarian can vary from a porter, through a person who delivers the equipment and gives training on how to use it, to a technician who manages a range of equipment including servicing and PPMing it.
So it is very hard to say that a librarian should be on a certain grade.
But is that not what AfC is here to sort out? Each person getting paid for what they do.... or will this just start a another long set of postings and arguments?
For the record our librarians will be on the MTO2/3 level and will be expected to do maintenance work on the library equipment, which will include electric beds and wheelchairs as well as the ususal pumps, ripple mattresses etc, and should be able to give simple user instruction to the nursing staff.
Robert

I would agree with the comment on the last post regarding the potential 'spread' (scope)of these types of jobs.
For my part I actually have a Medical Devices Nurse working in a similar role and apart from the operational issues of running the service this person delivers clinical advice and equipment usage advice to equipment users amongst other things (competancy training/Cnst link/Incident analysis link/equipment usage stats etc).
Our Library operators work for the nurse and are graded ATO.
Their role is somewhat more basic as you would imagine(cleaning, delivery, collection, storage, basic inspection, library inventory updates and fault reporting etc)
We currently do this on Pressure releif equipment and Infusion equipment.

Sara,
You say Clinical Advisor/Manager as opposed to the day-to-day running of the Library, is there a difference, and if so, how?

Manager wise I am responsable for overal service & the day to day running but it is my staff who carry out the daily work of cllocting, cleaning, delivering equipment. I have developed guidlines and work instructions which they work to. My office is within the Library so I am easily available to answer questions from them and I can see and hear whats going on with their work

We only have a small library at the moment with plans to expand in the near future. We have one SATO running the library assisted by portering outof hours. We intend to increase to scope to include cleaning and take on 2 part time ATO's. One of our MTO3's supervises, and reports on activity.
