Here is a question.
Isn't everyone entitled to have the opportunity to do just that?
Either as part of their on-going annual appraisal (of course we always do that as part of the appraisal !), or at another time?

Another question.
Will some claim to be disadvantaged if they do not get that chance?

Or, will it make a difference anyway ?

"Early implementors" - what has been your experience of this aspect ?

I attended an interesting presentation about AfC and two comments particularly struck me as significant.

The harmonisation of pay scales and terms and conditions was being discussed - in relation to the job evaluations, job profiles etc. The case of the Speech Therapists equal pay claim was raised and the comment made that once all the jobs had been evaluated and mapped onto the new scales, there would be no oportunity for abusing the system and no one would be able to claim a pay rise on the basis that their pay scale didn't match someone else's ! frown

There was also a reference to the new minimum salary point on Scale 1 which would benefit all the lowest paid groups. Apparently this should be self financing - funded from the savings made higher up the scales by abolishing the unsocial hours and enhanced overtime payments ! !

So it's basically a re-distribution of wealth exercise, with minimal cost to the NHS.

As an MTO3, this is my 'Summary of Tasks'. Can other MTo3's, out there, identify with the content?

• Analyse, organise, plan and carry out the servicing, testing, fault diagnosis (down to component level), repair and calibration on a variety of equipment, including complex life saving/support electro-medical and mechanical therapy equipment.

• Assemble, install and commission new electro-medical and mechanical therapy equipment.

• Perform record keeping duties as appropriate, including input of all asset and maintenance information on the SEMS departmental database.

• Update competency in line with current technology and standards by attending approved training courses and peer group training, as requested by line manager.
.
• Be able to identify in excess of 7000 items, 2000 different products of patient connected equipment in use within the Trust and understand their basic operation.

• Have responsibility for the service and maintenance and full working knowledge of the equipment in specific areas – Physiotherapy and the Equipment Library.

• Condemn equipment, when necessary, and provide technical information for the procurement of new and replacement equipment.

• Procure and maintain the supply of spare parts and service items for the repair and maintenance of in excess of 7000 items of patient connected and mechanical therapy equipment.

• Risk assess and alter, when appropriate, the maintenance protocols on any piece of electo-medical and mechanical therapy equipment.

• Propose and implement changes to departmental policies within the Medical Electronics Department and Specific areas.

• Provide technical input into the trials of electro-medical and mechanical therapy equipment.

• Liaise and negotiate with colleagues, suppliers clinical and nursing staff to provide training on the safe use, operation and technical aspects of electro-medical and mechanical therapy equipment.

• Ensure that appropriate data is available to the Medical Electronics Manager for him to influence the purchasing process of new equipment.

• Provide detailed, analytical reports to facilitate investigations following the failure of equipment.

• Responsible for all aspects of Health & Safety, within the Medical Electronics service, in line with the duties of the Health & Safety Co-ordinator.

Some of those points seem more appropriate for an MTO4 - or even a 5 ! Surely a 3 should be able to repair and service a wide range of equipment working alone with minimal supervision - and anything more than that, like modifying maintenance protocols, should be done by the supervisor or manager.

Come on, extracts from other MTO 3's JD's would help us all to see the differences in our duties.

Does the maintenance of Anaesthetic machines and ventilators earn any extra points.

Everyone I've spoken to about Anaesthetic Technicians confirm that they get additional points - the tech who does it here certainly does. I think this is fair providing that the anaesthetic machine and ventilator part of the job is on top of the normal MTO3 job description. If they ONLY do anaesthetic machines and vents, then they should be straight MTO3s.

It will be interesting to see how the job scores !
