Dear Colleagues,

We are currently holding a trial of ICU patient ventilators. we are looking at:

The Servo i from Maquet
The Hamilton Galileo from SLE
The Avea from Vyasis.

We are looking at others but we have on site practical experience of these.

I would be very grateful for any technical feedback that you may be able to give me regarding the above companies/ventilators, either through the EBME website or my Email address:
Paul.Latham@rwh-tr.nhs.uk.

I am particularly interested in:

Ease of service/repair.
Reliability.
Helpfulness and response of service departments. during problems and breakdowns.
Lead times for spare parts.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Best Wishes

Paul Latham

Hello Paul
Here at Papworth we have 9 Servo i ventilators and 4 Galileo Ventilators. The Servos are used heavily in our CCU and the Galileos are less heavily used in the Chest Unit.
I have found the Servos to be extremely reliable and cost effective in both maintenance and repair. The only problem is the need to replace the battery modules every 3 years at a cost of about £200 each. Maquet recommend fitting each ventilator with 2 battery modules.
The Galileos have caused no problems and I have only seen them when they are due servicing. However the service procedure is rather long winded and requires special tools.
Hope this information is of help.
Chris

Hi Paul,

I am not sure how far along the line you are but you might consider consider contacting Cardiac Services up in Stockport (www.cardiac-services.com) to speak with Jon Hollinshead (07789907249).

Cardaic Services are sole distributors for the eVent Medical Inspiration Ventilator (www.event-medical.com) which is new to the market here in the UK.

It is very comparable from a performance perspective to all of those mentioned above but at a reasonable cost advantage.

Many thanks,

Liam.

Hi Liam,
I heard that event is started by few tech experts moved out from NPB. Is that right? Is there any big difference between the basic technology of both event and NPB

We have one SERVO-i among a heard of 300's. In three years its had four patient circuits, two complete touch screen displays, and two battery packs. Servicing is a breeze but the kits aren't as cheap as say a Drager... Hopefully we'll dump it and the rest soon and change to something like the Datex Carestation... Evita XL's nice but its huge and pricey...

Our hospital opted for the Evita Xl over the Servo i, I'm not 100% sure why, but from our point of view, the "servicing" of the Servo i was expensive in comparison.

Sadly the 840 from NPB was kicked out due to its inability to function correctly with corrigated tubing.

what a jump!! from the Servo 300 with 100's of knobs to twiddle to a touch screen lol

We have Evita Xl's in Dudley and they have been reliable with next to no breakdowns. We also have the 3000 transport vent and again that has proved reliable.
