Following on from the purchase trolley saga - does anyone have a safe working practice policy/procedure for equipment trolley use ? ie how to use / safe load etc. I am sure that many people overload their trollies in order to get as much stuff back in as possible - its all too easy to do on a busy shift! Has anyone a document that outlines what should be done, how much to carry , infection control etc that I can look at which safeguards staff? :)I would be interested in any health and safety stuff relating to this ? rolleyes

Can't help you with documents, unfortunately. But, surely every NHS Trust runs regular Health and Safety "Manual Handling" courses (so those people must have it all "chapter and verse", I would have thought). But really it's all about common sense. Don't over-load, and keep the heavy stuff at the bottom (keep the centre of gravity as low down as possible). Don't tell me your new trolley didn't come with an instruction book! smile

Yeah we have the usual but I'm after specifics - and as for common sense when did that ever feature in the NHS!

To be specific, we would need to have a look at your particular circumstances. What equipment are you dealing with? What type(s) of hospital building:- high-rise, spread-out, Portakabins, lifts ... etc. Distances travelled. Indoors/outdoors ... plus a look at your trolley! smile

Do you know Geoff I'd really like a look at my trolley too !!
Havent got it yet!

The equipment is Baxter Colleague and Asena GH pumps, Kontron Cardiac monitors mostly, spread out hospital, with 2 floors so some lifts, mostly indoors. Its three-quarters of a mile from one end of the hospital to the other and we walk that twice a day or more and back!

Yeah, I'm with you on this one, Eddie (I think). Sorry JoLee, but I can't really see your problem. Sounds like you're in a pretty typical situation there to me. smile

I doubt there is much info on "safe working practice policy/procedure for equipment trolley" about because the vast majority of trolleys that I've come across inside this Trust and others have a handle that is too low, forcing the users to bend over whilst moving.

The trolley you have purchased should have a maximum weight specified and that is the limit you should not exceed - and yes I do know that most ignore it but there you go.

(who exceeds the weight specified as overweight)

JoLee have you looked at the Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations, (LOLER)1998? If you consider the patient as a load within the definition of what equipment these regulations apply to it should point you in the right direction.
