Hi everbody,In our Dermatology dept we have one of these machines. It is used for treatment of sweaty hands and feet. It has a reverse polarity function. In one direction it increases the current supplied to the patient upto 27mA and then cuts back to 18 mA as a safety feature. However , in the reverse polarity mode it continues to rise to the max figure of 32mA with no safety foldback feature.Has anyone any expeience of this machine or its modes of operation?

My guess (and it is just a guess) is that the unit is faulty. That is, would you not expect it to operate in similar fashion at either polarity? There is a fair amount of general information on iontophoresis on line (Google, etc.) but nothing too specific on the unit mentioned. But if all else fails, perhaps you may be able to obtain information from these people.
If you don't inspect ... don't expect.

Have you got the service manual for this? I just had a quick look and there is little apart from measure the current through a 2K2 4W or 1K 1W resistor. My guess, and it is a guess, would be one of the fibre optic channels is blocked. Best of luck speaking French!!

I love those old "Victorian" sites. There's something about them that seems to be lacking in modern builds. Apart from the ... er, solid construction, it's probably the grounds, the spaciousness. Back in those days, patients were allowed time to convalesce, were they not? You know, leisurely strolls (staggers) around the grounds, gathering in the ... um, crop! Meanwhile ... back to the (topical) subject of sweaty palms (or feet ... there's a pleasant thought)!

had a look at the circuit and to be honest there is very little in it at all. Looks like a class B amp output to the patient being driven by a common collector transistor. The fibre optics provide feedback into op-amp comparitors and then a differentiator/integrator (can't remember which is which, too long ago). should be easy enough to fault find on apart from the circuit diagram comes in 10 pages. All 1970's technology,CMOS and analogue, could have been a project in Everyday Electronics
