Don't you have any opinions, then (or do you prefer to be yet another passive bystander)? frown

On the radio this morning it said that each missile fired costs £1million and that the planes cost £35,000 per hour of flying time.
I thought the country was broke but the Government seems to have found a pot of money when it wants one. Shame they did not find it before all the public service jobs - including the NHS - were cut.

Apparently the "argument" is that the missiles have already been paid for (and perhaps they were getting near their "best by" date), and that RAF bods are being paid anyway.

Meanwhile warfare is not meant to be a spectator sport. Don't forget that many of the pictures you see in "the media" will have been posed, orchestrated, whatever. A lot of it is "spin". And I seem to recall that we've been there before.

Needless to say it will all end in tears. If only those of bereaved mothers. frown

The missiles fired have indeed been paid for, but the point that was being made on the radio was they will have to be replaced as they only have a certain number of them and the replacements are £1million.
The costs given for the planes flying time was the additional cost of actually using them as opposed to sitting in an RAF base.
Both of these are additional costs on top of the normal stand-by costs of "being prepared".

Totally agree, even with the euphemism "collateral damage" a human life is a human life, whatever their nationality, choice of leader or political view.

Or even the other euphemism "family members", as heard (seen) so often on this forum. whistle

In my experience, when we get right down to it, folk all over the world are all looking for the same things. Security, law and order, a decent environment, quality of life, the dignity of work, shared respect, shelter and something to eat ... and stuff like that. Or (if you like), in a word:- love!

I can't see how bombing the [censored] out of people helps with any of that.

OK ... just one last thought:- what happens when the "rebels" (the "freedom fighters", whomever) start carrying out atrocities against "civilians"? frown

Surely the operation to impose a "No Fly Zone" as well as protecting citizens from armed forces is the act of a responsible society.

Are the "rebel forces" not armed, then? frown

1) "Spontaneous uprising"
2) "Freedom fighters"
3) "Popular revolt"
4) "The Facebook Revolution"

Yeah, right!

As I have no doubt said before, we all have our own versions of reality. I won't bore you all with mine.

Meanwhile, let's leave it to the so-called "Arab League" (or, for that matter, the "African Union") to sort out their own messes. Or are we on some sort of revenge trip here? If so, that's what that courtroom in The Hague is supposed to be for. That's how civilised countries are meant to go about things:- due process. Not by letting the gung-ho Top Guns off the leash every chance we get! frown

Who mentioned the rebel forces?? If they wish to fight, let them get on with it. I was referring to the man in the street with a family, who is protecting him?
Surely it is our duty as responsible civilised people to look after those who can't be protected by their own government. Good Samaritan and all that!!

My goodness some people have short ‘selective’ memories. What about people remembering the 21st anniversary later this year of Operation Desert Shield. It might be better remembering that than the 8th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.

Such a pity that the mood of the Saudi’s changed towards Western expats then. Strange that it was after the invitation from the Saudi’s for Westerners to help defend their country in 1990 (Desert Shield). At the time I seem to remember a full page advert in newspapers after Desert Storm. It said - in 1914 it was Belgium, in 1939 it was Poland, in 1990 it was Kuwait. From the government and people of Kuwait to the government and people of the UK ‘Thank you’.

I wonder also if the ‘Gung ho’ Top Guns who are let off the leash in Libya have any feelings at all about their role. No of course not. They are not humans at all are they.

In an idealistic world everything would be sorted out by jaw-jaw instead of war-war (as idealised by Churchill). Problem is – we don't live in an ideal world. Last time I looked, we lived in the real world. Suffering and dying, normally done by civilians in military conflict, is an appalling consequence of some egotistic prats lust for power and glory. Unfortunately those Nations with the means of standing up to tyranny are normally asked to help.

I most certainly am not rooting for the guy. Prats one and all.
