What's the point of having a service manual if you don't have a laptop with Siemens software and passwords installed

No, all our Siemens equipment is on contract and we are connected to Germany so all the equipment is being monitored. Siemens won't give access except for basic first line maintenance.

OK ... it's advanced kit; but it makes me wonder what will become of it once Siemens decides (chooses) that it's "no longer supported".

I guess we all know the answer to that one. frown

Sounds like a "hostage to fortune" situation to me. Tolerable, maybe, for "Big Firms" like the one you're with, Neil - but not so rosy for many (most) others.

Does it need a permanent connection to Germany, BTW; or just during fault-finding, calibration etc.? If so, what happens when the line is out (down, or otherwise disconnected)?

Geoff, it is supported as long as the contract is valid
