I have just learned that both the KSA and UAE have introduced VAT at 5% on most goods and services. frown

But the Makkah-Madinah high-speed railway will be carrying passengers soon. Planned journey time is two-and-a-half hours, apparently.

By the way, if there was ever an oxymoron, surely it must be a "value added" tax!

I hear that the Princes* now have to pay their own utility bills.

Wow, things are really getting bad out there. whistle

In my case it was the change in law for property ownership as you can buy but if you die the government gets the proposers and if you leave the government expects all property value back so they can re sell. Ludicrous I said so invested in other countries but had a run of bad kick so back to blighty.

Are you talking about the Kingdom?

What's the point of buying property there if you're not allowed to live in it? Unless things have changed drastically since I was there, there's no way you would be granted Saudi citizenship or rights to permanent residence. Once you have run out of work (or local sponsorship), you get chucked out - as happened to me a couple of times. And once you're out, you would have very little (tending to zero) control about what happens to anything you had to leave behind in the desert (again, I have stories to tell).

Unlike the UK, the KSA does not like the idea of the country and its assets being owned by foreigners. And quite right, too. whistle

Although I might add that retirement to Abha or Al-Baha (or maybe Taif) would be an attractive proposition as far as I am concerned. smile

BTW, there's no "if" about dying. It's more a question of "when" (and "how").

June 20, 2019 will be my last day here in Saudi Arabia. Clearance has been completed and now waiting for the remaining formalities to be completed (after Ramadan) then a One Way Flight.

All good things must come to an end, sadly. frown

When you get round to writing your *memoirs, Neil, I even have a title for you:- "The Last Man Standing".

And don't forget that "retirement" does not mean you shouldn't come on here with Words of Wisdom from time to time!

All the Best, Mate. Flying East? smile

* I tried to get Big Tony to get his stories written down - I even offered to edit them - but (as far as I am aware) they have still yet to see the light of day.
