At the beginning of this Covid 19 crisis, a number of engineers from Virgin Atlantic having been placed on furlough approached the Trust to volunteer their services to assist in whatever capacity we could use them.
After receiving some basic yet CPD accredited courses in the maintenance of medical devices, over 30 engineers have been deployed in EBME departments in each of our hospitals, each of the Virgin staff giving freely of their time on a roster attending to help at least 2 days per week.
We have been overwhelmed at their response, commitment and enthusiasm. Their attitude has been first class and possessing a broad spectrum of transferable skills, their impact has been massively positive.
As one may imagine, these service provider colleagues are kindred spirits, a "brothers in arms" commaradary has developed quickly as knowledge and experiences are shared as EBME staff and volunteers go about their work, it really has been a very uplifting and refreshing experience.
As we begin to return to some resemblance of normality, many of the Virgin engineers are returning to work so I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to personally and on behalf of my staff, all of the Virgin Atlantic volunteer engineers. Your contribution deserves recognition, it has has been invaluable and is appreciated by us all.
The easier and safer choice for you would have been to remain at home, you didn't do this, you willingly stepped up to the mark in a time of need, gave of your best and made a difference.
And for this - we thank you.
