Hi all, I have a problem with some ATL HDI 5000 ultrasound machines that we bought. 5 of them were considered good and the 6th one faulty before arrival. While testing each of them on arrival, I noticed they were not booting up. When I removed all the boards as directed by the service manual, it boots up to the Philips screen. When I slot in the front boards, it boots, but when I include a back board, it doesn't boot, and vice versa. This happened with all the 5 machines. I also switched their Power Supply Module (PSM) boards. Still didn't work. Eventually, I then decided to try the PSM board from the 6th faulty machine, and surprisingly, all the boards worked as I placed them one after the other. This made me feel that all the other PSM are faulty. Unfortunately, as I placed in the last board, it booted to the Philips screen and immediately switched off and started showing the OVP TRIG light.

I switched off and on but since then, it has been showing the OVP-TRIG light.

I measured the voltages on the PSM boards for both the one considered not working and the one with the OVP TRIG. Below are the readings:

OVP TRIG indicates that +6 V or -6 V have higher than normal voltage, or -5.2 V current limiting has been activated (-5.2 V circuits are drawing more than 14.3 A).

Sounds like you have an interesting situation there, Emeka; but at least you have enough machines to play with.

Normally swapping boards about like that is not recommended. If "needs must", swapping one at a time may be required, but "with caution". But who knows what went on before you laid hands on them!

From what you are saying (and at first glance), it sounds like all but one PSM is faulty, as well as the "last board".

I'm guessing a possible short circuit on the "last board" (as that would presumably activate the OVP TRIG current limiting indication).

I see that you have the manual ... is it any help?

I am thinking the OVP-TRIG may be as a result of frequency difference. The machine requires 100 - 120V; 60Hz but our electricity in Nigeria is 220 - 240V; 50Hz. I used a stepdown transformer to reduce the voltage but I don't think it also converts the frequency to 60Hz.

What do you think about it?

I believe that machine should be able to handle 50/60 Hz OK ... but it won't be too happy with any power interruptions

By the way, those power voltages you have listed look OK to me.

I really am stuck at this point. I was thinking I could get a guide on troubleshooting and repairing the PSMs.

It's difficult to advise further without actually being there.

But don't lose hope ... at least you have six machines, rather than just the one - so you can make comparisons when needed.

Just proceed in a patient, logical manner. Yes; power supplies first (as everything else depends upon those voltages).

With ultrasound units such as the HDI-5000 (which is an excellent machine), faults are usually (mostly) power supply related, or (less often) hard-drive related.

At first, try to get one machine up and running. You know, one step at a time.

Regarding any possibility to convert to 220 V working, you shall need to take a look at the AC Input Module (ACIM).

I believe there have been various versions of ACIM to suit specific mains power conditions; so your options will depend on which ACIM's you have.

I wondering now if all six are the same!
