Hi All,

Just trying to get some ideas on how other hospitals carry out acceptance of Department of Health (DoH) loan equipment e.g. monitoring, ventilators etc.during these troubled times.

Do your hospital go through a formal Pre Acquisition Questionnaire (PAQ) process, Master Indemnity Agreement (MIA) or accept it as a loan device from the DoH and just complete the usual acceptance and registration without bothering with the PAQ/MIA side of things?

We have received a fair bit from the DoH.

I have been responsible for gaining PAQs etc. We treat anything with the same process as new equipment, owned or loaned.

Who would be responsible for the ongoing servicing requirements of this equipment?

Better ask whomever it is they belong to.

And (or) it you haven't used them, or don't expect you ever will ... simply send them back.

Otherwise ... take them onto your books, add them to your PM schedule ... and crack on!

Should the people responsible for accepting the devices into the department cleared up this issue before even taken them into the department.

Once the loaners are in the hospital, the ball in their court (ebme) and then becomes their problem

(don't forget the manuals ... not to mention parts and (or) consumables)

Luckily we have run acceptance testing alongside the introduction of the devices without delaying implementation.
As far as I am aware all ventilation devices have been gifted to the hospitals and therefore are the responsibility of the hospital to maintain. We are still waiting for a response from the DoH regarding the monitors, which luckily most have a 24 month service schedule.

MHRA Guidance mentions "loan equipment". Presumably NHS Hospital Trusts endeavour to follow such guideines.

But "24 month service schedule"? I would be interested to hear how you convinced management (safety committee, whomever) to agree to that one.

1) Risk-Based PM
2) AEM*
3) Some other approach

* "Alternate (or Alternative) Equipment Maintenance" - which has apparently become popular in the USA, but (from what I have seen) is hardly distinguishable from Risk-Based PM. Both permit deviations from manufacturers' laid down procedures - as well as lengthening of inspection intervals - for many (most) items of equipment, as long as certain (pre-established, agreed) criteria are met, and documentation is competed and authorized.
