Is there an "agency technician" scene in New Zealand, then?
- not sure what this is - is it like a recruitment agency? our company engaged with quite a few, but they so far can't find any skilled experienced biomed in NZ

What's the age limit? - i'm not sure as well. but here is the link to work visa
https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new...about-visa/accredited-employer-work-visa

What's the score re: visas?

(Asking for a friend)

and i think there's a condition there for visa to have a minimum 30 hours work a week.

How is it in NZ ... are in-house biomeds directly employed by the government hospitals (Health Boards, whatever)? Who looks after the small government hospitals and clinics?
almost all Gov Hosp in nz employed their own biomed and they look after the satelite sites clinics rest home etc

Is much use made of service contractors?
yes a lot in place for both gov and private - mostly theater related device stryker, erbe, ge etc

Are there many private hospitals (and clinics)? Do they have their own biomeds?
yes there's a lot private hospital - southern cross, evolution group etc, and they usee service contract for their biomedical services and we are one of them. And this pandermic have accelerated the growth of these hospitals and clinics that we need more more biomeds. Issues is we have no one in the country..

Interesting. Thanks for that.

Stand by to be inundated with enquiries!

Yes, the "agency scene". I guess we could call them recruitment agencies, but in the UK there used to be a few agents through which freelance biomeds could pick up "bookings" at hospitals ... usually just a few months at a go, sometimes a bit longer (but rarely much more than six months). It was a way of life (aka earning a living) for some blokes ... roaming around from place to place.

Were you successful the last time(s), Kris?

I have heard recently that there have been a lot of folk leaving NZ. Would you care to comment on that?

By the way, if I were thirty (or forty) years younger ... I would be there!

Yeah, it was a success! We brought in a biomed from south England (ex-NHS). The immigration process took a bit, but once he started it was business as usual just in a new country. We’re hiring again because one of our team wants to retire to a remote part of NZ we don’t cover. And hey, we don’t stop anyone from moving on that’s life.

Yes, lots of people are leaving NZ especially younger Kiwis and many head to Australia first for experience and supposedly better pay (i am not so sure with this)

I also know a 50ish biomed used to work with us who moved to Queensland on a six-figure package for a regional biomed support role. He's happy just a bit bored because of the remoteness.

Um age is just a number. Here in the hospital we’ve got people from everywhere and every age band. Legally there’s no compulsory retirement age, you can get NZ super (pension) at 65 and still work, and age discrimination is unlawful, decisions have to be about whether you can safely do the job, not your age.
