Firstly, what is BS EN 50637:2017?
Taken directly from “bsi knowledge” - BS EN 50637:2017 is an international standard that focuses on requirements for the basic safety and essential performance of medical beds for children. BS EN 50637:2017 medical beds with nonadjustable and electrical/mechanical adjustable functions. BS EN 50637:2017 applies to medical beds with an internal length of up to 180 cm suitable to a body length of 155 cm. The standard was introduced to reduce entrapment and ligature risk associated to smaller patients.
Standard medical beds that are found in general ward locations, intensive care and in children’s wards all comply BS EN 6061-2-52:2010, and it’s evidenced that testing and documentation only support the use for patients above 146cm and 40kg in weight.
Latest NPSA (National Patient Safety Alert) that was published on the 30/08/2023 asking all acute locations to be compliant to BS EN 50637:2017 by 31/03/2024.
