We've been looking at the calibration costs for our multimeters and have come up with the idea of buying new ones every year. There would appear to be some adequate meters out there for <£40 - we're not talking about Fluke and the like stuff here.
Anyone else thinking /doing the same?

Cheers
Mark

Yes, Mark, I always buy mine from the cheaper end of the range available at Maplin's! That way I don't feel the pain quite as badly when they "go missing"! smile

That seems a bit wasteful IMHO. Another option Mark is to have only one multimeter calibrated and to use that as a reference for all your other meters in the event of any queries on readings. This is a cost efective way of ensuring that your multimenters are reading ok. Over the years I have found that there are very few situations that require the accuracy given by a calibrated meter. When that situation does arise then use the calibrated unit! wink

You're spot-on there, John. Personally, I never have the need for anything beyond the little toy I use every day! Recommended. smile

John, that was the other option that we were thinking about, which I forgot to mention.
Can I get my memory calibrated?

Cheers

That's exactly what we do here too, we have 2 calibrated Flukes which is used for PPMs and each of us have a Fluke 73 for ordinary purposes ( these are tough and lasts years! )

Although I agree with you we tryed the minimal number of devices calibration idea but got continually hammered by the QA so now all our Multimeters are Calibrated

QA? Who are these people, Jobsworths? Or do they have a valid argument? Do they pay for all that calibrating (or do I pick up the tab yet again ... the taxpayer, that is). How may times were the multimeters found to be out of cal (did anybody check), I wonder? smile

My department is ISO90001 certified and the auditers who check us out have no problem with this system of Multimeter calibration. cool
Exactly who are the QA people who audit your department and what qualifies them to make this statement. confused
