This has been quite an interesting discussion. We appear to be a lot further behind in Scotland with PTB groups due to be matched in June and July. Here in Tayside we are even further behind and matching is likely to start next week when I hope start putting my training to good use!
I have quoted the the knowledge and training section from from a job description I have done for a specialist clinical technologist (MTO3?). I hope this is of interest.
BEng or BSc in relevant technical subject preferably with a suitable postgraduate diploma, or equivalent recognized experience and a minimum of five years post qualification experience in a relevant area. Experience should consist of proven in-depth knowledge of the use, repair, performance testing and assessment of a wide range of medical, office and laboratory equipment gained through practical experience in-house training and manufacturers training courses.Working at this level the post holder will have developed significant sensory and manipulative skills in the use and application of fine tools while working with delicate or miniaturized equipment.Occasionally provides advice to patients or their carers on the use of equipment and helps resolve problems.The post holder should be eligible to join the voluntary register for clinical technologists. This is expected to become mandatory in 2006.A comprehensive knowledge of the related health and safety issues including working with electricity, lone working, COSHH and the NHS Tayside health and safety policies.The post holder should understand and comply with the quality system and adhere to the relevant work instructions.
