As you mention, a real doughnut has a hole in the middle (hence its name). The "English" jam doughnut is misnamed. Maybe they started off with holes, but:-

1) The stingy English probably moaned about the "missing bit".
2) Where would you put the jam?

Not many doughnuts on the Dark Side, Darth. We can rarely afford such extravagance.
