Those of us who are posting and reading comments re Training, and membership to professional bodies will hopefully be interested in the following from Keratiloe Moyo Engineer and colleague.
I am the new Chairperson for IPEM in the London Region and a Biomedical Engineer based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich. I would like to meet with IPEM members and non members in the Region to discuss several issues, among which are the following:
- how can we encourage more people to become interested in participating in IPEM issues
- educational and professional development opportunities and requirements for EBME and Clinical Engineering staff
A number of people have questions about the role of IPEM in their everyday work. What is IPEM doing? How involved is the organisation in EBME and Clinical Engineering issues? What is in it for me/why should I continue to be a member of or join IPEM? What will I get out of this membership?
Questions such as; are we adequately trained to do the our work effectively? Do we need to be trained further before we can effectively carry out work to the correct level? Are we maximally utilising our resources and stretching ourselves to excel in all that we do? What stumbling blocks are we facing which hinder us from carrying out our work? Is the work still interesting enough for us to get up every morning and look forward to going to the office or has it become boring routine? How can we spice up things so that we maintain a high level of interest in our work? How well established is your department? Do you have a clear departmental structure which shows where you could be in the near future or have you hit a wall. Are we a professional body or just a bunch of people with a spanner and a screw driver?
What is the future for EBME and Clinical Engineering department? Which way are we going? Do we have replenishment programmes to get the young people interested in joining us? What happens when people retire?
These and any other questions we have will be addressed during the meeting on the 4th of April by Dr Peter Jarritt, President of IPEM. Peter is very much interested in this meeting and would like to come and update us on what is currently happening out there to address some of the issues I have mentioned.
I would like to invite you all to this meeting. I hope that every EBME department and others within London will be represented. I would like to urge you all to inform your non-IPEM member colleagues to come as well. This meeting is not just about IPEM. It is about our departments, our lives, our future and the future of EBME and Clinical Engineering. So, if the President of IPEM can willingly and gladly make time to come and sit down with us here in London, please come to the meeting and meet with him. This is our chance. Let us not waste the opportunity.
