Thanks John, but what I envisage is something along the lines of what Ian has at Whiston. Time will tell if it will work or not. smile

In reply to Mark N.

Mark,

Our Pool staff are both on A&C3, although the feeling by them is that it's not really an appropriate grade to be on. But they are uncertain what would be more appropriate, the jobs a bit of a mixture really, does any one else have any ideas on this subject, i.e. what do you think fits the post:

Q.1. Is the job Admin & Clerical?
Q.2. Or is it an H.C.A. grade?
Q.3. Or is it more a "low grade' M.T.O.?
Q.4. Any other suitable grade?

Another question, which has been raised by some of my colleagues here is, do we really need to be involved in running Equipment Pools?

This poses more questions then:

Q.5. Who should run an Equipment Pool/Library?
Q.6. What responsibilities should the staff have?
Q.7. Who should they report to, Nursing or Engineering?
Q.8 Should it have its own budget?
Q.9. What involvement should Medical Engineering have in its set-up/ running?
Q.10 Following the assumption it is run by us, should our staff have to stand in for their holiday or sickness absences? [@ Great expense]
Q.11. Do they, if part of Medical Engineering, have any priority on our services?
Q.12. Would it be of benefit to all to be collocated with Medical Engineering Departments?
Q.13. What percentage of equipment should be on Contract? [i.e. Pressure Relief Systems, Flowmeters & Gauges]
Q.14. Rather than finish on Q.13. Are there any other questions to be asked by anyone?

Over to you gentlemen & ladies, what do you all think, I proposed and set up ours but it's no longer part of my job responsibilities, but I am involved with my colleagues for standing in at lunchtime or for holiday cover if required. frown

I see several mentions of flowmeters, pray tell me why they are in an Equipment Library? Here we have plugged all the holes in the walls with flowmeters, they stay in the holes, don't get dropped, wall oulets don't get worn, etc. Cheaper in the long run.

When was the last time you saw a sink with water outlets into which you had to plug a tap you obtained on loan from a (plumbing) equipment library?

I thought the idea of an equipment library was that any device that is not actually in use gets taken to a place where all can get access to it if they nee to use it.
What your saying is lets equip all beds / areas to full capacity even if that bed / area does not use the device except for one day a year. Nice if youve got the money, but lots of use dont have and thats where the library helps.
Also I also recollect that you are not supposed to have a device connected to a MGPS unless its going to be used, deteriation of o rings when kept under consant pressure can mean when you remove the flowmeter the T/u will actually leak because the rubber in the o rings has lost its memory and will stay i the compressed state.
