My spelling is not bad. I am typing this on a Medigenic keyboard and I blame that for all my typos.

RoJo,

Thanks for the tip.

We are being quite careful that we 'try before we buy'. So the scanner is in place and we are testing the labels and the company sends them to us. The software that drives the scanner seems able to cope with a mixture of existing formats .. we just have to wrestle with our decision on the standard.

And get the Supplier to 'try before they Produce'!
(get down off my soapbox again)

All we want to do is have the manufacturer's Serial number in the format the manufacturer has decided, for entry into our database.

Ultimately, we will ask the software house who are authors of our Db to write a module that allows us to audit equipment using the bar-code (probably into something portable, like a PDA).

Our aim:
Make a tedious job simpler & eliminate some error generation. Dream on.

Is this what happens, then, when an “NHS-wide solution” is attempted (…see the current thread about Equipment Library Software)? wink

Actually, bar-codes are very interesting, are they not? For instance, see http://www.barcode-systems.com/faqs.html

But in this case, Chris, would it not be more expedient to have the supplier provide a list of the serial numbers in any common format (eg, an Excel file, or whatever), and simply append them to your database?

Then you can worry about bar-coding later! At the moment, you’re almost guaranteed to get it wrong (ie, Sod’s Law applies). smile

If you don't inspect ... don't expect.
