Hi

Does anyone KNOW what the band 7 national job profile "Medical Engineering Section Manager" actually means. Does it mean a section with BME or is BME a section within something else - like Estates?

Has any early implementer any kind of proof of what this means? How do I ask the people who wrote the profiles?

I am the Chief Technician in our Medical Electronics Department, which is a section of Estates. As far as I am concerned, I manage this section with regard to annual leave, work issue and planning, budget etc. In fact anything that is required to ensure the smooth opeation of the department. As far as I am concerned, I fit into the category of a Medical Engineering Section Manager.

Graham,
What if there is more than one department in a trust? I.E several trusts probably have an overall manager , while the day to day manegerial issues of each individual dept may be managed by an MTO4 for example. Does the MTO4 then fit into this catagory? I would say Yes when their Job description reflects that they
perform many of the requirements for a band 7.

Oh dear two replies, two different answers!

Basically I am currently an MTO5 and looking at this profile but...maybe if my MTO4s can fit this band 7 profile then maybe I am looking at band 8.

The problem is that we are a small unit (me, 5 and 2 trainees ) and so any "sections" under me must perforce be even smaller.

I really need to know what happened in the EI sites.

Graham,

How does your dept justify the position of MTO4?
We're a bigger dept than yours - we haven't got any MTO4's

cheers

I have to say I thought MTO4 was quite usual! in A4C speak it would equate at least to Specialised...OK?

Search back though this site and you will find a posting by Paul Robins dated 4-Feb-04 to quote from this:
'Do not think that the role L419RR Section Manager means the individual in overall charge of the service because it don't. Posts of this nature are covered by the professional manager profiles or the relevant senior EO profiles or the relevant Clinical Scientist Profile, This profile in this format refers to a post heading up Mechanical Services say in an "EBME" service which has Electronic, Anaesthetic and Mechanical and other services for example' - I just with it were a bit clearer in the published profile if it really means section rather than department. Here in York I have 13 staff including Renal and Anaesthetics and report to the Director of FM. I'm paid on EO3 so band 7 would be good news for me.

Graham,

In parts of Somerset, MTO2 is the 'working grade'. In my area, MTO3s' duties include 'specialist areas'. Apart from that, there isn't any demarcation between the grades.

I would assume, but I don't know, that my manager would be equal to an MTO5.

Would I be far from wrong if I was to assume that line management should be within two grades above the highest grade technician, or am I living in 'cloud cookoo land'?

Cheers
Mark
