I am surprised that a job description was rejected just because the term specialist was used in the title. I did get some advice from the job matching trainers group within Tayside on this jd. They gave me some useful pointers to areas that needed to be improved. However they had no problems with the title.

A job description can suggest almost anything in the title, but unless the body contains evidence to back up any claims made it will be ignored.

One thing that I feel throws panels when Job matching (and I am a matcher) is that the list for Specialised Med. Eng. is not exclusive, but if Renal, Annaesthetics etc. is not in the job description then Band 5 here you come.

The requirements for factor 2 could be clearer ie What is 'experience at diploma level' for a profession that is, by definition, practically based? I am hoping (!) that these may be corrected when the promised modified profiles are released (ok - I'm an optimist).

We have just received grading at band 6.
I have asked for the rational sheet.
I believe Southampton are band 5

Col,
Could you tell me if you classified yourselves as 'specialist' via your JD
(ref AFC terminology) or were your job roles regarded as bench grade ?
Do you mind me asking (and you telling) what your previous grades actually were ?

Steve,

MTO3 with 2 star points.
I don't think you can grade your self as specialist.

The big problem for us all is that there has not been any equivalence between MTO and the new grades, we can all read between the lines and say MTO2 = 4
MTO3= 5
MTO4 = 6
MTO5 = 7
But nothing has been put on paper as these grades have vanished with AFC.
A staff nurse before AFC is still a staff nurse.
MTO3** is no more I am now a specialist medical technician, new title same role.

We basically were asked individually to look at the requirements for band 5/6 and decide where we fitted for each category and provide evidence to justify. This was all collated and one JD was written for the group.

The matching panel are the ones who decide the banding, if you get enough points to warrant band 6 your title has specialist at the front.

I do know that gradings are out there, a nearby hospital have been graded as 5.

Perhaps a poll could be started. Grade before, then grade afterwards, if people want to remain anonymous.

The JD needs to be worked on, because you will not get band 6 on the basis that another person of the same current grade at the same or different hospital has got band 6.

Col,
How did you specifiy the knowledge, training and experience on your JD/Person Spec? Could you put up a generic version of the JD/PS for us all to refer to please?

How did you allow for diffences between * levels as these are supposed to represent extra resposibility, etc? Have all your MTO3's been allocated the same band with 0,1,2,or 3 *'s?

If there is disparity across the NHS regards to banding levels, this should show up on the CAJE system. It also helps in the preparation of appeals.....!

Regards Andy
