Thank u Mr Gee Bee,
That was a helpful site where i could get the details of special bipolar capacitors. I have also contacted them to know more details (if it could be used as a starting capacitor for a 24 V motor, that is the purpose of this capacitor in the Drager incubator,as you know).

Thanks again
bye

Dear friend,

You could attach two capacitors 150 with less and the two positive the capacitors bonds in the PCB Board.

It results...

Might as well take em down to your local Comet's for a quick bodge up.

If you have not got the correct replacement part, then as a 'Medical Engineer' you should not do a 'bodge', someones life can be dependent on what any of us repair.

Therefore fit correct part, whatever the cost!!!!

Spot on Skippy, you tell them.

The same goes in or nothing.

Paul (Draeger) can you advise on the capacitor manufacturer, website, etc., ok.

I would be more interested in attempting to track down a uk supplier of the same capacitor.

Paul can you advise on manufacturer, etc?

Thanks.

Jim (Well done Skippy).

You could try Robin Cook at Aerco in Horsham (UK) – he likes a challenge. Contact him at rcook@aerco.co.uk or telephone 01403-260-206.

Meanwhile, lighten up you guys! There’s nothing I appreciate more than a good hardware hack (apart, that is, from a good software hack). Oliveira was probably just being hypothetical, after all. wink

Remember too (as I have mentioned before), in some parts of the world a tech has little choice but to carry out such repairs (ie, using whatever is available locally). The experienced tech can usually judge when it’s OK to (for want of a better word…) “bodge”, and I’ve seen many works of art in my time! smile

Hi All

We have had problems with this cap. For those who don't know it makes the fan motor run (or not in this case). Drager do not supply it (although a couple of Drager people were very helpful and found us one, but they are a bit rare.

68u is a preferred value but as it's bigger than anything used in speaker crossovers is unobtainable (or maybe not - see the link above). I have to say that I don't understand the way caps work on a.c. well enough, or maybe don't have enough info on the original, to be sure these are OK. Do we have a theoretician in the house?

Some background info. When our incubator stopped we pulled the cap and measured it as 32u, putting in a 47u made the incubator go.

I guess all our incubators have similarly dried-up caps. I will get hold of some of the caps linked above and give one a try. I will run a motor (any one got an old spare?) for a few months to make sure it doesn't catch fire or anything equally dramatic. What's to lose, the incubators are going to stop soon anyway? Go on tell me they must be approved by Drager.

As to bodging, caps in series, etc I would have preferred to use 2 (say 32u and in every other way OK) in parallel. As far as I know basic electrical theory applies even in medical kit.

Well done, Graham (a man after my own heart)! Let’s run this one to ground, so all those tired 8000’s may be given a new lease of life. A couple of minutes worth of research (ie, looking at the capacitor in front of me) leads me to believe that the cap in question is made by Elko Rauh (who may well be into audio components, by the look of things) and is marked 68 mfd 100 v bipolar. A few clicks of the mouse has given the following wonderous clues:-

http://www.klingtgut-lsv.com/shop/zubehoer_intertechnik_kondensatoren_elko_rauhe_folie.htm

www.intertechnik.de – try this one and then type in elko in the Suchen field (yes, it helps if you know German). No more time now, but have fun!

And don’t worry, there are a lot of theoreticians lurking about on this site! smile

The capcitor provides a small small magnetic field, phase shifted from the main field to provide a starting torque for the motor. Once running the fan should lock on to the main feild and run synchronously with the main feild. If it slips out of synch the secondary field will pull it back again (so to speak). The capacitor should not be bigger than designed as this will allow more current through the secondary winding, possibly overheating it. If it is smaller and the motor starts (ie it produces enough torque in the rotor) then all should be well. The capacitor should be an ac capacitor, not electrolytic.

Hi again

Our cap was marked ROE which I believe to be Roedestein - now part of Vishay - can't find them as big as 68u now - put in a call to Vishay and so now wait in hope.
