Looking back through this topic there seems to be about 8 licensed radio amateurs. A few more may have joined since it was started. Are we going to try and get a net going then?

Paul, I finally managed to get a HF antenna up. If not on HF how about EchoLink? If you have a current radio licence you can download the software free to use from www.echolink.org Once you have downloaded the software you can set alarms to monitor for callsigns.

How about a bio-med conference server now there are a lot of internet gateways?

Hi Adrian,

You haven't mentioned what type of HF aerial you've put up, 160 mtrs is a good band for inter G contacts during the evening, or 80/40 mtrs during the day. I can be found most evenings on 160 mtrs and can cover the Birmingham area fairly well.

As for echcolink, I'm quite aware of it but I don't want to put it on my creaky old computer, not only that, it's in the main living area, so I don't think the family will appreciate the old man talking to the computer, it's bad enough on the wireless! They'll really think I've tipped over the edge.

If you want to give it a try on Top Band let me know a time and frequency.

BTW Huw, you don't need to pass the morse test now. I have checked with the RSGB and if you have passed the RAE like you have done, you can apply for a full HF license, a full 400 Watts on most HF bands smile

Tempting?

Hi Paul,

I went for an easy cheap option - full size G5RV. Haven't had many contacts on it - whenever I seem to go on there seems to be contests on the bands. I think for top band i need to short out the antenna and centre feed it - will have to look into it. If you have a local EchoLink node my gateway is 176074 and you can connect to it most evenings.

Cheers!
Are we saying that the USA spend billions on the stealth project then go plain language on comms??

The recently (and sadly) defunct 'black-triangle' website was very informative for military frequencies including in, above and around Macrihanish and SW Scotland. Several times I have 'caught' and listened in to US/RAF aircraft over Scotland refuelling etc.

Black Triangle used to attach recordings of interesting scans of military aircraft activity including a superb one of a U2 spyplane (Dragon 65) talking to ATC Prestwick. These are usually around (Scotmil)134.3fm and sometimes around 240-260fm.

Nothing encrypted here, ask any aviation enthusiast..
