Hi Paul G0UPS,
If I'm not mistaken, I've heard you on 80 Mtrs?
I'm usually loafing around on that band during the evening.
Maybe if there's enough of us like minded mob around we could start an EBME net?
If you type my call into qrz.com, you'll see my ugly mug looking out at you! Pass my regards onto G0EJO, sorry to be so formal, but Paul didn't give your name.
BCNU SN best 73 to u both de G4LNA Paul.

Hi there,
I started working life as a Radio Officer in the Merchant Navy, now an extinct breed. I went to sea just after the collapse of the old "area scheme in 1969, which meant I had to work Portishead form all over the world with an 80 watt transmitter, happy days.
I must admit that after 5 years and not having gone dot dash crazy, (my opinion!!), I stayed clear of radios, apart from having to take my special licence for the VHF that I had on my boat some years later.
As a matter of interest we were expected to look after all the radio gear on board as well as the RADAR. Test equipment in those days was a multi- meter, an AVO if you were lucky!!!.
Well I could swing the lamp for a lot longer but duty calls, good luck to you guys. laugh laugh laugh

Blimey! A discussion group with no postings from John Sandham?? <chuckle>

I used to be G8FCB (until I discovered Smirnoff)

Hi Ray,
There are a lot of ex-sparkers that have taken their ham ticket, I should think you would breeze through the multi-guess exam these days if you felt like scrambling the old brians with a bit of RF.
I sent 11 years part time working for the RN, but only got to sea once!

Careful John! You can bet yer life his watching.
I notice your old call, G8FCB, Hmmm, I wonder seeing as your in the Cambridge area if you were involved in the setting up of GB3PI? The reason I'm asking is that my old call was G8EFS and can remember working through that repeater back in the '70s when it first came on.
Come on John blow the dust off that old call, or update it with one of the new M3 calls, then we can have a chat on HF smile

Paul - GB3PI was nothing to do with me - honest! I did, however, work for Pye Telecom who facilitated it. I think the whole company was run by licensed amateurs then. Apart from anything else: I'm simply too young to have had anything to do with it (ner ner ner ner ner) But I do remember listening to GB3ANG when no-one else locally could hear it - thanks to my 10-ele Skybeam (size matters!)

John - is nowhere sacred?

John,
A 10 ele sky-beam a? I'm impressed, I used to run a 10 ele at 50 feet with 350 watts into it, so I'm going to have a look back through my old log books to see if we have worked before, bet we have! Bit depressing 'cos a lot of the old calls back in the '70s are silent key now :-( .
