I've given the responsibility for teaching nurses in the use of medical equipment. Though the teaching is OK, structuring the regime is somewhat awkward. If anyone has set up such a structure I would be pleased to visit a department and take some advice. Thanks.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of Nurse training going on out there ! I only do the "technical" introductory lecture on ECG monitoring and recording and then they have to get practical sessions assessed by the local assessors or the ECG Technicians. There are various other courses to do with setting up infusions, male catheterisation (ugh!), wound dressing etc which are run by the training department and led by various clinical people. Not much help, I'm afraid !

It's sometime possible to produce "evidence" - but whether anything actually happens or not is another matter !

I have started to compile a nurse training package for the use of equipment syringe drivers etc. using power point it is only for the Emergency Department i work in at present, but may go trust wide.

Shay, Our nurse trainer has quite a lot of experience and training info which he has developed into a trustwide pack. if you want to get in touch, his name is Huw Evans and he is running a Forum for Trainers at: http://www.nursetrainer.com/forum/index.php

I have to agree, but things can only get better. All NHS Hospitals are being funded to train, and it is a priority in most. EBME departments are taking the lead in this area, and many are very closely linked to the trainers with some having their own staff carrying out user training on operational issues.
