My wife, a teacher, has just had her annual registration form from the General Teaching Council (GTC). The annual fee which she pays is reimbursed by her employer as one lump sum in April's pay. The GTC charge £33.00 for annual registration.

My question - why does the HPC CURRENTLY charge £60.00? Is the GTC fee lower because the employers (ie government departments) pick up the tab and thus ensure a fair charge?

Any thoughts welcome. confused

Any Registration Fee that you pay to an approved organisation that is a requirement for your job is reclaimable back on your tax return.

I'm not talking about claiming back tax - I'm talking about full refund of all costs.

You cannot claim the HPC fee back unless you have a local agreement with your employer. The national agreement is that you can claim it back through your tax return (refundable in full through reimbursement on your tax code).

The Health Professions Act says that registration must be funded by the Registrant and not the employer. It's written into a statutory instrument so is the law I'm afraid.

So claiming against taxes seems the only way to recoup the fee.

One note regardiing tax.
If you are considering this action make sure all your financial affairs are spot on.
Making any claims what so ever from Taxman will highlight your name and a full tax accessment may follow.
This will include all your savings, earnings and any shared savings you have with spouse etc. What tax youve paid on such and how much interest youve paid.

OK - because of the "Act", the employee must pay then go through the long-winded process of reclaiming part of the payment.

This doesn't explain the £27.00 difference between the administration costs of the GTC and the HPC (not including any payments made by the registrant for the future health references that the HPC are proposing).

PS - Parliamentary Acts can be ammended.

As there are probably far more teachers than the professionals registered by the HPC, the GTC could charge its registrants less to meet its overheads.

If you want the NHS to fund the registration fee than lobby your MP.

Can I ask a question here?
What area of the HPC register are you discussing (Clinical Scientists ODP's)?
