It has to be cleared with your manager, you can't secretly service nebs on your way home

Can your employer dictate what you do outside work times as long as it does not affect your work.
In a test case a friend of mine, who is a nurse, was on his break at night leaving just an agency nurse on the ward, he went for a sleep in his car. An incidnet happened and he was disciplined for not being available. He won his case as the court ruling was that the hospital was not paying him for his break so they could not say what he did in that time.

A number of contracts have standard clauses about clearing secondary occupations with your manager. Generally the reasons revolve around conflict of interest issues and safety issues (which include things like being overtired and prone to errors). It would be wise to check your contract as instant dissmissal is the usual penalty.

If it’s OK for NHS biomeds to moonlight (and we’re talking here about people salaried at tax-payers’ expense), you guys will be telling me next that serving members of HM Forces are at it too! OK, let me guess, it’s alright as long as they’re not wearing uniform, and don’t use any of Her Majesty’s tools and test equipment!

When I was in the forces (many yrs ago) I didn't turn down work.

Made a few hundred extra - in my own time.

I have to agree with Geoff as I know some of the people involved.
They ARE promoted overseas as “experts from the British Health Service”, furthermore, they DO NOT use their holiday entitlement as I understand it and do use NHS test equipment.

And no, I don't have an axe to grind here, as our company don't get involved with overseas contracts.

Careful there, Keith, or you’ll be getting called all sorts of names, banned from every NHS hospital in the country (I have to use a nom de guerre and adopt a disguise myself, you know), and be forever banished to the Dark Side!

Everything's cool as far as I'm concerned, "Big Thing". We know all about the "company involved", and remain on good terms with the bloke concerned. But there are some things that are not for public consumption, shall we say. Suffice to mention that there are reasons for these "bleats" that I won't go into just yet. I don't think I know you, but I think you'll agree that these posts do tend to generate interesting reactions (eg, just like yours). Meanwhile, I doubt that you're that good, whoever you are!

But, thinking about it, if you are that good, why not join us?

Why is everything cool with company involved, but not so for the biomeds or military techs earning a bit extra Geoff ?

Usually you advocate complete freedom of information, so why is the name of the company involved not for public consumption ?

Come on Geoff, name and shame so we can have a proper debate regarding this somewhat dark side.
