I think its beyond a joke! the government should have never had the right to enforce this ban. Sadly many people moan n groan about it, but they wont lift a finger to protest.

although i agree its a bad habit i would have liked to have an option, smoking or a smokefree establishment.

will i be soon be told what make and model of car to buy, or what beans to purchase from the shop??

What's that ... different hospitals for smokers and non-smokers? wink

Meanwhile, with beans and all the other stuff stacked on super-market shelves, it's gone the other way. It's almost as if there's too much choice when shopping.

PaulKWJ, I think you are missing the point. The type of beans you buy does not slowly kill the people around you, giving them respiratory conditions or cancer.
And as for smokers having "rights", the only relevant right they do have is to be able to slowly kill themselves in any way they see fit, providing they dont hurt anyone else in the process.
If I had the nasty habit of swinging sharp implements around wildly would I be given breaks in order to do this? Would the government allow me to do it in public places? I doubt it. But it is akin to what you smokers are doing, albeit the damage to others around you is not as obvious.
And how hypocritical is it for a health organisation to allow people to smoke on site?? this is a no brainer people!

I can picture the future.... a man is caught smoking, arrested and taken to court for attempted suicide!! teehee

if smokers are to be forced to quit, why isnt smoking just made illegal? the sale of tabacco products ban?

why mess about with no smoking bans and the such like?

Even if it weren't for the taxes, they couldn't just ban it outright suddenly. It needs to be slowly fazed out as it is an addicitive substance.
If it were suddenly banned like that, 10 million people would be cut off from their precious substance. Enter the opportunists who see the profit to be made and start illegally smuggling tobacco into the country and selling it on the black market.
It would be something akin to the alcohol prohibition era in the US.

people already have such schemes cyber, why pay £5 for packet when a bloke in the local can sell "imported" cigs for half the cost.
it will be intresting see what the government will do to gain extra funds after the decline of tobacco sales.
as Kawasaki mentioned previously, i would love to see those figures.

True, but your average "man with a van", bringing cheap cigs across the channel is nothing compared to the kind of racket that would immerge should tobacco be illegalised completely. Plus they would be able to charge what they like as cigs wouldnt be available in the shops anymore.

Sorry Paul, but it reads as though all that nicotine et al has addled your thought processes, Mate. Take my advice, sincerely offered, and quit smoking today. Not only that, but avoid smokers, and (if you're like me) challenge their foul behaviour. You should never allow yourself to become a victim, passive or otherwise. Believe me, it’s the best tip you’ll ever receive (even from this forum). smile
