Fordy, Ensure the portable has a good stable base, some on the market have 3 legs and they and have been known to topple over.

Oh, really? And who would be dumb enough to buy a mobile examination lamp with only three legs on its stand? Surely 'ospital 'elf 'n safety have decreed that all mobile stands should have five legs? frown

That is a failure in design! Five legs have proven to the norm no doubt you can still find four legged around.

The five leg design is ok for small lightweight single lamps. When you get to the bigger minor ops lights a well designed four leg design provides stability and manouverability. The important thing is not to allow the light to swing outside of the footprint of the legs.

... as we see every day! If it's really that important (?), then surely it cannot be beyond the wit of manufacturers to include ways of preventing it from happening. That is, incorporating stops! smile

But you're right, Cliff. Large lamps (effectively mobile operating lamps) generally have heavy (cast iron, even) bases. Even Nurse Diesel has a tough time tipping those over!

Sure you all have the point. Well designed products are not made to fail.

On a 5 leg adjustable hight trolley with either a reticulating arm or a flexible arm they list price at £767.46. A bit precise but it is only a list price and you did ask.
