What were you before, then? (sorry, Mate ... I couldn't resist) wink

I've never been overly motivated by feloos myself (and that's probably why I haven't got any now). To be honest (and if I had to put it into a single word), I suppose my own "reason" would have to be adventure!

My plan was to stay for one year to get enough for a mortgage deposit...

Not many people know this (and anyway, why would they care?), but I once stayed in a certain Desert Kingdom for over ten years without leaving its borders. I am probably the only Brit who has ever done this, I should imagine (although I have met a few "long-timers" out there ... some even wore the thobe outside of work ... something I was never into, I should add). No big deal. It's just that the Kingdom suited me, and I guess you could say I was suited to it!

Peace be upon you (says it all, really). smile

as a side note, current temps at 4pm today in normally sunny al ain is a cool 41 degress celsius (overcast clouds) at 40% RH. walking outside reminds you of "warm soup", dubai and abu dhabi will be worse as they are coastal areas. somehow, i like the 50s temp better than this humid weather.

Yes Alan, the dry heat of the desert (eg, Riyadh) was always preferable to the retched humidity of the coastal areas, in my opinion. But, there again, I've never really been much of a "beach person" myself.

Meanwhile right now (Sunday lunchtime), it's a pleasant enough 18 degrees in the centre of England (with a little light rain forecast ... all week)! smile

Geoff,

Will you ever gonna work in the Middle East again? Yesterday, I saw Hamad's (HMC) advertisd in Singapore.

Make the impossible POSSIBLE. I know we all can and it is the wisdom to distinguish one from the other.

Can't see that happening again now, Roger, unfortunately. The (main) reason I left last time was that attitudes had changed out there (unsurprisingly) following the (ill-considered, in my opinion) invasion of Iraq. Let's just say that it's very difficult to convince young Saudi dudes that you're not an American when they're busy throwing rocks at you!

I find too, that with the advent of the internet (something I never had out in the desert), I can remain "internationally active" now without having to budge at all. And don't forget that Modern Britain is a very "international" place, culturally, anyway. So why travel beyond it's borders (especially by air, which isn't a whole lot of fun these days)? And lastly, there are plenty of "adventures" to be had right here (I am only twenty minutes away from the Peak District between Sheffield and Manchester, for example).

The other reason is that I myself may have changed, too. I'm not really into working "for the man" (whomever he may be) these days. No, I'm more or less resigned now to following my own humble path, roaming around Great Britain (something after the style of the bedu). And hey, the mosque is less than a mile from where I'm living at the moment ... so I feel right at home (it time to move on soon, though)!

But finally (and this could be the clincher), I never found bread and dripping in Riyadh (whilst here it is available just across the street)! smile
