Hi Guys & Girls

Our Trust wants KPI's put in place for the EBME services to the Trust. Is anyone involved with this process that can provide me with a few pointers, interesting reading websites or examples of their KPI's?

All help would be appreciated as I am struggling on this one.

Thanks.

Jim

You have my sympathy there, Jim. Another acronym to add to the list! Sounds like yet another waste of time to me, Mate. Wonder what it will be next month (week)?

Perhaps I am misunderstanding the issue (most likely), but shouldn't "the Trust" be advising what they want from you, rather than asking you to tell them what they should be expecting (if you see what I mean)? smile

Jim,
Are you in contact with your local NPSA Benchmarking Group? They compare themselves with each other to monitor performance so should have some indicators?

Hi Geoff

Thank you the sympathy, at this point I need it. I also agree with your comments.

Basically the Trust wants me to set/agree our KPI's which must integrate in with the business plan objectives of the Trust, Directorate and Department. These KPI's must be measurable and involve such issues as HR, Efficiencies, Quality and Finance.

Measurement of these KPI's must be affordable, realistic and achievable, etc, etc, I waffle on.
I have n't got a clue what I am talking about presently

However, I do not expect or anticiapte that I am the only bod on this site to be involved in such a way and so I would cherish any help from my learned colleagues, savoury or otherwise with a bit of humour too.

Thanks for the reply.

Jim

Hi Rob

I have not particpated in the Benchmarking fraternity (NPAG?). I may have to liaise with Joe Riley in Preston as he is active in this area I think.

Again, thanks for the input and the book reference.

Jim

More please guys & girls, I need you.

Yes Jim, I feel your pain. Meanwhile I am continuing my own campaign to have common sense regain its previously valued position of importance throughout our once-great nation, and that includes clearing out the Jobsworths in our (similarly erstwhile revered) "national" health service, and returning it to safe and trusted (not to mention cost-effective and fiscally prudent) hands! frown

The "business plan objectives of the Trust" ... what BS is this? Surely the only aim of the Trust is (or should be) to care for the sick and needy? And inter alia the aim of biomed is to provide technical services in support of that primary aim.

KPI's:-

1) Responding to calls for technical assistance
2) Fixing the kit
3) Supporting the nursing and medical staff
4) Giving technical assistance and advice as required
5) Carrying out a programme of routine maintenance
6) Other activities in support of 1) to 5) above

But, whatever you do, be sure not to overfill the kettle when making your cup of tea (see the latest in a long, long line of helpful government "guidelines")! This is from a quango apparently known as Envirowise, which gets £10 million a year from us taxpayers to advise businesses on being green (whatever that means). Green tea, perhaps? Tea Performance Indicators? Surely it can't be only me who's sick to death of this *&@$£*% insanity!

Hi Gavin, deepest sympathies mate.

Have you tried Google with "medical equipment management +indicators", it brings up a fair few even some of our colleague's medical device policies.

If I had to, I'd go for something that you know is achievable - naturally, but maybe something that's not on their radar, equipment standardisation perhaps. You help to provide the right environment for standardisation, training, information, evaluation, recomendation etc but it's up to them to provide the loot!

Just a thought, but it might work and show them we are much more than a spanner and soldering iron service!

Best of luck.

Brian

You make it sound like "they" are the enemy, Brian. frown

As a personal aside, "spanners and soldering irons" are what I'm all about, I'm proud to say. That and computer code. Can "they" do any of that? Somehow I doubt it.

Hello Jim,

As far as Trust/corporate KPI's

I normally give KPI's on

Capital program
- What was agreed to be bought = indicator
- What has been bought = performance

Training program
High risk devices
- how many, where are they = indicator
- Who has been trained on what, where = performance

Medical Devices Policy (purchasing, training, maintenance, quality)
- Who reviewed, when, to what references = indicator
- Who has implemented, where, compliance % = performance

Maintenance
Expected PPM per qtr = indicator
PPM % = performance

Expected tech hours per qtr = indicator
hours per qtr = performance

No fault found < 10% = indicator
No fault found actual % = performance

High risk equipment MTBF (mean time between failure) = sample device of groups for each report.

Sounds like they are possibly asking you to write a service output spec for the EBME service in readiness for possibly outsourcing to a PFI provider?

Or am I being cynical.
