Agreed.
Reggae is not a style I've ever played but it's definitely minimalist.

Practically no effects, very little bass, no overdrive at all (unless you're using a hybrid).

What guitar/amp are you using?

I have an Ashdown GR20 watt Combo, pretty basic with gain, Clean/OD, bass, mid, treb and spring reverb. The guitar is a Squier Telecaster Special with a choice of neck / bridge or both pick up selection. I've played around and with everything on mid, clean and the guitar on both or sometimes bridge pickup, it sounds almost there but it sometimes sounds to me that the genre makes use of wah, therefore i was thinking of adding this to my xmas list, but i just wondered if there was a standard configuration of the above settings for reggae before i invest in any effects.
Thanks

A Telecaster is a great choice for Reggae. If you've never used wah before you may want to think of auto-wah as it's quite tricky to get to grips with (in my opinion.) I haven't bought one in 20 years - so I reckon they are probably all 'auto' these days. smile

For rhythm, bridge or middle pickup, no overdrive, a shortish delay (around 100-200ms)with a small touch of reverb. A little bit of wah is good but a little more is too much but you'll know it when you hear it,

Absolutely right Ed, you only need a small amount of wah and it's a fairly fine adjustment.
You could also try a ska style and cut out the wah. You need a very clean sound with a chopped expression (on the chord and not your face)!!

Any recommendations for a wah wah pedal. Something reasonable without going through the roof.

You can't beat a Dunlop Cry Baby in my experience. I also have a morley wah the has an optical pot. I bought it as my last wah wore out. But, I soon found that the Cry baby was the wah for me.

Well until the next "new thing" comes along. £60 should get you one.

Thanks for that Mick. I think I read somewhere that Hendrix used a Cry Baby.

I know some male hair dressers too. But when I need my hair sorting out, I prefer to go to a barber. smile
